CULTURE NEWS

  • Stone carver Heather Milne Ritchie mentors women artists at her Barre studio — preserving a 150-year granite tradition. She offers apprenticeships that help new carvers develop skills and keep Vermont’s stone carving craft alive.  Vermont Public

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle and high school educators can boost their personal finance instruction skills in a free, online graduate course offered by Champlain College's Center for Financial Literacy. The eight-week course runs March 2—April 24 and offers 20 scholarships through the Rauch Foundation, with applications due by Feb. 19.  Burlington Free Press
  • Two Vermont students were honored for their leadership when they received the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award on Jan. 12 at the Statehouse. The award, given by the Vermont Secretary of State's Office, recognizes young leaders (under 25) for their work in social justice and civic engagement.  Burlington Free Press
  • Following Act 73's passage last year, lawmakers are debating a new map for school districts before a new funding system using a foundation formula is phased in starting in 2028 (this shift will move budget decisions from local school boards to the state).  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont National Guard members of the 86th IBCT held a ceremony Monday at Camp Johnson in Colchester to honor the team that will deploy this week to Grafenwoehr, Germany to train Ukrainian soldiers. Col. Frank Tantillo said it is an honor for his team (Mountain variant) to support the mission.  NBC5
  • Attorney General Charity Clark warned Vermonters Monday about scams that exploit heightened emotions, including schemes targeting SNAP recipients and others involving fake tech support and unpaid toll notices; she advised residents to slow down and verify contact sources through the Consumer Assistance Program (call 800 649-2424).  NBC5
  • Vermont’s first Kid Governor, Roslyn Fortin, was sworn in on Monday at the State House in Montpelier and will lead projects like a 5K plus food drives to support people experiencing homelessness, joining other youth cabinet members from across the state.  NBC5

  • High school sports fans can vote from now until 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, for the girls Athlete of the Week powered by Delta Dental via Burlington Free Press ballots. The winners will be announced on Friday, Jan. 16.  Burlington Free Press
