  • Vermont Coverts is hosting a free workshop to help woodland owners plan for passing on their forests at Pierson Library in Shelburne on Jan. 26, with sessions at 3-5 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. (pre-registration required).  Burlington Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • A 71-year-old Bennington woman recouped over $1M on Christmas Eve after federal agents traced nearly $648,000 from a cryptocurrency account tied to a sophisticated scam that had drained her life savings over several years.  Vermont Public

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Vermont Arts Council announced $135,000 in grants to fund arts lessons for older adults and preschoolers statewide. The grants will support classes in Wolcott, Island Pond, Newport, and early music programs at Head Start and senior centers.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from across Vermont showcased robotics skills and teamwork at the FIRST LEGO League State Championship held Saturday at GlobalFoundries in Essex Junction, where 37 teams advanced from regional qualifiers and four teams earned a chance to represent Vermont internationally.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is holding four public comment meetings on its 2025-2035 Wildlife Action Plan. The meetings run on Jan. 22 in Castleton at Edward Kehoe Conservation Camp, Feb. 5 in East Montpelier, Feb. 10 in Orleans, and Feb. 17 virtually (comments accepted until Feb. 27).  NBC5

  • Residents receiving an unexpected package must check if the label matches their name before opening, as Vermont law and federal guidance advise returning misdelivered mail (including items from brushing scams) to the postal service promptly.   • As sub-zero temperatures and icy roads are expected later this week, Vermont fire departments are preparing for a surge in emergency calls. Hinesburg fire Chief Prescott Nadeau said teams are checking equipment and calling extra support, urging residents to salt driveways and test alarms (to keep everyone safe).  NBC5
  • Winooski Police Chief Justin Huizenga has asked city council to approve a budget request to renovate an aging station with issues — missing, asbestos-laden flooring and ceiling holes that have allowed mold to grow; voters will later decide on the bond.  Burlington Free Press
