  • Special Olympics Vermont will launch its new Penguin Plunge Expo on Feb. 6 at Hotel Champlain’s Green Mountain Ballroom from 3-7 p.m., serving as a check-in hub — where participants receive wristbands, materials, and prizes before the charity plunge begins.  Burlington Free Press
  • With a cold snap forecast this weekend, local plumbers advise homeowners to thaw frozen pipes gradually using tools like a hair dryer while keeping faucets open and disconnecting outdoor hoses to prevent cracks.  NBC5
  • Phoenix Books co-owner Michael DeSanto bought the free monthly paper on January 8 and plans to rename it Burlington Community Newspaper while keeping its tradition of sharing good news for 17,000 local readers; the new issue will be available on February 6 (with minor updates planned for design and content).  Seven Days

  • Burlington restaurants received nods at the James Beard Awards as local chefs vie for national honors. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lydia Ste. Marie, a UVM junior in nursing, was inspired by her loving family + VSAC support to build a future in caring for others. She received financial aid to attend college debt-free and now plans to start her nursing career locally before exploring travel nursing.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont Fish and Wildlife updated fishing rules effective Jan. 1 that set a daily inland bag limit of 50 panfish and ban crappie sales statewide while allowing year-round baitfish collection with larger minnow traps and free seller endorsements.  Vermont Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Immigration reporter Lucy Tompkins reported on border changes in northern Vermont in her piece from Jan. 21. She interviewed local officials (including a Border Patrol officer from Richford) to show how increased federal presence is affecting communities near the U.S.-Canada line.  Seven Days

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Vermont Medical Center has reversed its bag rule and now lets patients bring personal bags into the ER after implementing new bag scanning technology that began Jan. 20. Hospital security will screen bags with scanners (with manual checks when needed) to keep safety and speed high.  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont families face rising health care costs as premiums increase 22% and MRIs cost about $6,600 at UVM Medical Center. Gov. Phil Scott and lawmakers are exploring a prescription drug price cap and financial controls while rural hospitals get $200 million in federal funding this year.  NBC5
