  • After a busy weekend with several snowmobile crashes on trails, long-time rider Rich Butler of Duxbury urges riders to stay within their skill level and ride sober—especially as warmer weather brings more traffic to Vermont trails.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WalletHub ranked Vermont as the second-most educated state on Feb. 9 (using 18 education metrics) and found nearly 44% of adults hold a bachelor’s degree, reinforcing the state’s strong academic credentials.  Burlington Free Press
  • The Vermont Principals’ Association will induct 12 new hall of fame members at a dinner at the Delta Marriott in South Burlington on May 15. Inductees include coaches, student-athletes, administrators and an official recognized for decades of service.  Burlington Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Champlain froze fully for the first time in seven years; the National Weather Service declared it iced over last week (the lake remains dangerously thin) and cautioned against walking on it as temperatures remained frigid. People were seen walking on the frozen lake near downtown Burlington on Feb. 15.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont and New York lawmakers introduced a bipartisan bill today to preserve Lake Champlain's health and cultural heritage, aiming to secure clean drinking water for 250,000 residents and protect historic sites such as Revolutionary War-era forts. The measure, co-sponsored by Rep. Elise Stefanik and Sen. Peter Welch, could boost conservation efforts.  NBC5
  • Federal SNAP changes will take effect March 1, requiring recipients to document 80+ hours of work or volunteer efforts. The new paperwork rules could cause about 3,000 Vermonters, including many experiencing homelessness, to lose food assistance while local agencies work to ease the transition.  VTDigger

  • UVM Medical Center is highlighting Black History Month by featuring Reverend Antona Brent Smith, its first African American woman chaplain, as she supports patients in the palliative, hematology & oncology unit during tough times.  NBC5
  • A Strafford resident who was bitten by a rabid bat is receiving treatment while officials post safety information and urge residents to safeguard pets & people. A rabies vaccination clinic is planned for March 7 at the Strafford Volunteer Fire Department.  VTDigger
  • The Vermont chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention was recognized today for its outstanding loss-and-healing program at a national conference in Denver and for earning a Century Club Walk Award after Burlington’s Out of the Darkness walk raised over $159,000 for prevention efforts.  Burlington Free Press

  • Travel + Leisure recently ranked Vermont top for winter sports, citing its ski areas, outdoor sports and local flavor, according to Ski Vermont. The ranking comes as winter travel remains strong and invites visitors to explore venues like Stowe and Jay Peak.  Burlington Free Press

  • At Brattleboro's Harris Hill (where 55 jumpers competed), Vermont’s only Olympic-sized ski jump, newcomer Henry Loher (17) from Lake Placid surprised defending champion Urh Rosar to win the Winged Ski Trophy during Presidents Day weekend, qualifying him for next month’s Junior World Championships.  VTDigger
