- ➤ Burlington police responded just before 8:00 a.m. Friday near 1 Burlington Square to investigate an untimely death off Pine Street — the death appeared to be the result of a stabbing. NBC5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marlene Tromp was confirmed as UVM's 28th president on March 21 and will begin serving this summer as she moves to Burlington with her son, her sister and a family friend—she led Boise State since 2019—while promising to work with union members and community leaders to address budget cuts and concerns over academic freedom. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 21, House lawmakers advanced a bill that uses $118 million in one-time surplus funds to reduce school property tax increases from 5.8% to about 1.1% next year. Lawmakers said the move is a temporary fix that could lead to bigger financial risks later—debate on further reforms continues. Vermont Public
- ➤ On March 20, the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board approved $3.7M for projects that conserve 554.5 acres, support affordable housing by creating 6 homeownership units and 36 rental apartments in Hinesburg, and restore the historic Wolcott School House for community use (covering projects in Addison, Chittenden, Lamoille, and Orange counties) (aiming to enhance both natural resources and housing statewide). - ➤ Howard Center announced its Spring Conference, Perspectives 2025: Confronting Stigma, Cultivating Compassion, which will be held May 13 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in South Burlington with both in-person and virtual options.
