GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The State Treasurer’s Office and the Agency of Natural Resources asked lawmakers for an extra year to study costs under Vermont’s climate superfund law and for additional money (an extra $825,000 for the Treasurer and $675,000 for the agency) to hire needed staff. The request comes as incoming lawsuits challenge the statute (a suit by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Petroleum Institute alleges the Clean Air Act preempts the law). VTDigger
- ➤ Vermont AOT announced that it has awarded more than $5.7 million in federal funds to local projects through the Transportation Alternatives Program and Municipal Highways and Stormwater Mitigation Program. The funding will improve sidewalks and streets in towns like Burlington—where work on Rose and Cedar Streets is planned—and it comes after receiving over $11 million in project requests. VermontBiz
- ➤ Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced bipartisan bills sponsored by Senator Welch to lower the cost of prescription drugs by increasing price transparency and supporting the entry of more generics and biosimilars. The measures aim to help patients and families cope with high drug costs (addressing the affordability crisis). VermontBiz
- ➤ Today, Burlington mayor Emma Mulvaney Stanak and interim police chief Shawn Burke explained that strengthening the police force, improving employee experience, and reviewing new recruiting strategies using models from Boston are their top priorities for the department. They also said the city is working to secure a contract for a permanent chief by the end of the year — a change expected to improve emergency response and community trust. NBC5
- ➤ Gov. Phil Scott vetoed a mid-year spending bill that lawmakers proposed to extend the motel voucher program until June 30—he opposed using a budget adjustment for policy changes after already extending help via an executive order to unhoused families with children and those with acute medical needs.
