  • Mary Lake is traveling northeast to shear sheep at Maplemont Farm in Barnet, where she discusses flock health with local farmers (small profit margins push them to adjust practices) as the season moves from shearing to lambing.  Vermont Public
  • Vermont towns continue to enforce different backyard chicken rules as some ban roosters to curb noise—forcing residents in places like Barre to rehome unexpected roosters while neighbors in other areas can keep them. Local animal sanctuaries are receiving more requests to take in these birds amid the patchwork of regulations.  VTDigger

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lake Champlain Maritime Museum announced its Summer Party on July 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. where visitors will enjoy live music, dinner + ice cream, guided tours of the 'Fragments: Voices of the American Revolution' exhibit, games, and crafts, with proceeds supporting museum programs.  Burlington Free Press
  • Over 500 people gathered at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Burlington this Easter Sunday to celebrate a Mass that reflected on faith, family, and the true meaning of the holiday (following 40 days of Lent) while participants emphasized the focus on Jesus Christ over popular secular traditions.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rice Memorial student Benjamin Edwards will compete in a national quiz bowl on April 11 in Rosemont, Illinois, facing 300 competitors from 32 states (the event differs from team competitions). Seeding rounds will rank players before the top competitors advance to elimination rounds.  Burlington Free Press
  • An administrative committee in the Champlain Valley School District is studying a merger that would consolidate grades 6-8 from the two schools at Charlotte Central School. The draft report will be provided to the board in mid-May + the proposal includes facility upgrades and new transportation needs for Hinesburg students.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Peter Welch and Sen. Jim Justice introduced a bipartisan bill to update the Farm Credit Act by raising the eligibility cap for rural credit from 2,500 to 10,000 residents (aiming to help roughly 30 million rural homebuyers) as part of efforts to improve housing access in rural America.  VTDigger
