Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In September 2023, Chriss Zuckerman—who lived at a Howard Center care home— was hit by a car while crossing Shelburne Road against the light and died at the hospital, leading to a $175,000 settlement and an Attorney General investigation—raising questions about whether better care might have kept her safe—.  VTDigger

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ben and Jerry's Free Cone Day is happening today as the ice cream maker gives away free scoops at its locations nationwide — the company hopes to break last year's record of 970,000 free cones by reaching one million, and Burlington fans are lining up to enjoy the treat.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The town of Ripton will lose its elementary school this fall after a unanimous board vote closed it due to low enrollment—about 20 students will move to Salisbury Community School while teachers are reassigned with no cuts. The Essex Westford School District may shift Summit Street Elementary students to Hiawatha and Fleming schools if voters approve the budget, and Westford middle school students will join Essex Middle School, which has sparked mixed reactions.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington's former mayor Miro Weinberger has launched the coalition Let's Build Homes nearly a year after leaving City Hall to address the state's housing shortage. He said the group will work with public and private partners to build 30,000 new homes within the next five years—an ambitious plan based on state housing assessments.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planned Parenthood of Northern New England announced that it will close its St. Johnsbury health center on June 3rd, leaving patients with options for care through telehealth or at centers in Barre, Burlington, and Williston. The agency faced challenges from flooding and low insurance reimbursements — no staff will be laid off.  VermontBiz
  • A NICU nurse at UVM Children’s Hospital led a study testing smart bassinets to help opioid-exposed infants sleep longer and leave the hospital sooner. A chart review from December 2020 through September 2022 found that newborns spent over 17% less time in the NICU—nurses saved up to two hours per shift and poor sleep dropped by more than 41%.  VermontBiz
  • More than 32,000 Vermonters enrolled for 2025 in health and dental plans through Vermont Health Connect during the open enrollment that ended January 15—an 11% rise over previous years. Most enrollees received extra federal help that lowers out-of-pocket costs on Gold plans, but that support may end soon unless Congress acts.  VermontBiz

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Federal officials ended leases for the NOAA building in Barre, the HUD building in Burlington, and the NRCS building in St. Johnsbury as part of a cost-cutting move that saved nearly $260,546 as of March 26. Real estate experts say the action may add to uncertainty for landlords in a market where office vacancies are rising.  VTDigger

SPORTS NEWS

  • Elev802 is building a state-of-the-art hockey training facility in South Burlington scheduled for summer completion. The new facility will include a 60-foot by 200-foot ice sheet—physical therapy, pilates and food services are planned—and former UVM hockey star Pete Lenes said the project expands local options while keeping the Essex Junction facility open.  NBC5
  • Taylor Senecal, a senior at Essex High who will attend Colgate, returned after two years of elite play to lead the Hornets to a state championship and earn the Free Press’ Miss Hockey title. She scored 30 goals with 8 assists and even netted two coast—to—coast goals in the final game — proving her strong leadership on the ice.  Burlington Free Press
