COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 9th, a 6-year-old raised nearly $1,700 to buy warm coats, hats, and supplies for homeless Burlington residents—her family donated the goods to mutual aid groups that help those in need. The fundraiser built on a drive inspired by a cold winter day and brought local support to people living on the streets.  Seven Days

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burlington businesses along Main Street have suffered declining sales since roadwork began over a year ago as part of the Great Streets initiative to revitalize the Memorial Block—city officials plan to continue work through November while limited support leaves merchants uncertain about their future.  Seven Days
  • Activists from People’s Union USA have launched a boycott of Walmart from April 7 to 14 to protest corporate greed and practices that hurt local economies— the action targets Walmart’s retail stores, online services, and related brands. In Vermont, where Walmart operates six stores with 1,437 employees, the boycott aims to pressure the mega-corporation to change its policies while more protests are planned if no progress is made.  Burlington Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Chittenden County are asking the public to help find an older male suspect about six feet tall who robbed the Community Bank on Main Street at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday+ he left with an undisclosed amount of cash, and he did not use a weapon+ no injuries were reported.  NBC5
  • A Burlington man, 61-year-old Steven Malaney, pleaded guilty to a felony charge for possessing child sexual abuse materials and was sentenced to 10 years of probation in Superior Court—his sentence restricts internet use, mandates sex offender treatment and requires registration as a sex offender.  MyChamplainValley.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today at 10 a.m., Champlain College and NuHarbor Security held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the renovated Leahy Center to open a new cybersecurity hub that doubles the center’s capacity and relocates 25 NuHarbor staff for live engagement with students and faculty. The new hub will support a statewide dual-enrollment initiative offering hands-on training and college credits (funded by a NIST award) and expand cybersecurity workforce opportunities (called Vermont Cyber Start).  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Burlington leaders and local students announced new incentives to help residents adopt energy-saving technologies and reach the city’s net-zero energy goal. Burlington Electric introduced a battery storage pilot for 10 customers, a $5 monthly credit for installing heat pumps, and on-bill rebates for electric appliances.  NBC5

  • Today the Vermont Chamber of Commerce is holding a press conference at 11:30 a.m. at the State House during Tourism Economy Day—an event where business and policy leaders meet to discuss how tourism supports 10% of the workforce and adds $4 billion to our economy.  VermontBiz
  • On April 8th, Secretary Jenney Samuelson presented a proposal to expand Vermont’s addiction treatment services by offering longer residential care and enhanced correctional support to address the evolving drug crisis involving fentanyl mixed with stimulants—changes that target gaps in the current system and aim to improve public safety—hoping to reduce relapse and reoffending.  VermontBiz
