- ➤ ReSOURCE, Vermont’s largest nonprofit reuse shop, has grown as young people seek vintage items and others save money on new goods amid high prices. The group started in Burlington in 1991 and runs four stores — the largest in Williston — while working to lower waste. Seven Days
- ➤ The Lake Champlain Chamber held its 114th Annual Gala on April 10 at Hula with over 250 local leaders gathering to honor local achievements. Award winners included Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom as Business of the Year—The Flynn as Non-Profit of the Year, Hootie Hoo as New Business of the Year, and Sophie Owen Jankowski as Emerging Leader, and the event raised funds for chamber programs. - ➤ Deputy publisher Cathy Resmer introduced Seven Days' inaugural Vermont Cannabiz Guide in the issue published April 16th at 10:00 a.m. and noted that cannabis business has boomed since recreational sales began on October 1, 2022 - the state now has over 100 dispensaries and rapidly growing sales and tax revenue. - ➤ The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival announced its lineup and will run from June 4 to June 8—curated by international jazz artist Anthony Tidd. The event will feature local artist Kat Wright, the Roy Hargrove Big Band, a tribute to Alice Coltrane, and a world premiere of Origins: Sounds and Stories of the African Diaspora. NBC5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The UVM Board of Trustees and UVM Staff United ratified a three-year contract—offering non-faculty workers a retroactive 4% base salary increase, raising hourly wages to $20.80, and adding benefits such as bonus pay, improved sick day limits, and immediate dental insurance access. The agreement also sets future base raises of 3.75% in July and 3.5% the following July while creating a pathway for clearer career advancement as the university faces federal challenges to higher education. - ➤ The new UVM Soil Health Research and Extension Center in Burlington begins accepting soil samples on Earth Day, April 22, to give Vermont farmers local tests that check for living things in the soil, carbon, and organic matter. The center—supported by UVM’s Food Systems Research Center and the USDA ARS—will also host workshops and demonstrations to help farmers manage their soils. VermontBiz

- ➤ The Burlington City Council approved a zoning change that removed the 5,000 square foot limit for performing arts centers on Pine Street, clearing the way for larger venues to open close to downtown. This change supports Higher Ground’s relocation after its move to the Burton Snowboards facility fell through in July 2024 + councilors will review potential parking challenges. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ Starting May 7, domestic flyers in Vermont will need a Real ID seal on their identification card or driver’s license unless they use another accepted alternative such as a passport. In Vermont, renewing a two-year license will cost $39 while a four-year renewal will cost $62. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ Burlington will begin its annual Operation Clean Sweep on April 23, requiring residents to move parked cars during street sweeping hours to avoid towing and a $75 fine. Most zones ban parking from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. except Zone F — which bans parking from midnight to 6 a.m. — and free parking is available in designated Downtown and Marketplace Garages.
