- ➤ South Burlington Food Shelf is seeking a new space after its facility at 356 Dorset Street will be demolished by the end of this year (the group needs an affordable, accessible site with parking and bus access). Director Peter Carmolli said the search comes as the food shelf has grown since it began serving local residents in 2019. The Other Paper
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in Vermont have dropped to an average of $3.09 per gallon and Windham recorded the lowest average at $2.98 while Burlington stations averaged $3.16 today - down 2.6 cents since last week. VermontBiz
- ➤ The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets released the Vermont Dairy Delivers report showing that Vermont’s dairy industry contributed $5.4 billion today, up from $2.6 billion a decade ago. The report also shows that 73% of dairy farms are small (under 200 cows), 52% of farmland is used for dairy, and dairy processors increased from 95 to 158 in ten years (boosting exports worldwide). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Department of Environmental Conservation advised residents to season firewood properly (split into pieces no larger than a six-inch wedge and stacked off the ground to dry) to reduce costs, smoke, and harm to health. Residents can borrow moisture meters from local libraries (softwoods need six months and hardwoods need 12 months to dry) to check that their wood is ready for safe burning. VermontBiz

- ➤ Burlington today offers two hours of free on-street parking on Wednesdays and Thursdays via the ParkMobile app+a two-hour free period daily at the Downtown Garage until May 8 to help boost foot traffic amid street construction, attracting visitors to local businesses. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ Officials at Leahy Burlington International Airport urged travelers to get a Real ID before May 7 so they can fly domestically, and TSA said travelers will need a US passport or military ID if their license is not updated (applications can take up to 10 days). NBC5
- ➤ One year after the rental registry launched on April 1, 2024, city staff recorded 417 properties with 2,643 units registered and inspected 753 units that showed safety issues such as missing smoke alarms — city officials plan to seek additional office space and fee adjustments as they continue inspections over the next three years. - ➤ An immigration judge in Louisiana denied bond for Rümeysa Öztürk—her lawyers have asked a federal judge to order her transfer to Vermont today, citing ongoing health risks and claims she was targeted for her op-ed on the war in Gaza. NBC5
- ➤ Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish doctoral student detained near her Somerville apartment on March 25, has her attorneys asking a Vermont judge to order her release on bail or her transfer from Louisiana to Vermont by today—her lawyers argue that she was wrongly targeted for free speech after writing a university op‑ed that led to her visa being revoked and they request a hearing on her release by April 23.
