  • Winooski residents can join Green Up Day on May 2 for a citywide litter pickup at the Senior Center (8:30 a.m.–noon) and a Memorial Park cleanup with a cookout and guided walk from noon to 2 p.m., with supplies available at the Senior Center or City Hall.  Burlington Free Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Shelburne fire crews responded Wednesday after a homeowner burned a field without a permit, and the fire spread to half an acre before 12 firefighters used 400 gallons of water (high winds aided spread) to bring it under control while officials reminded residents to get a permit.  NBC5

  • Local entrepreneur Kate Niemczyk launched The Bunny Bin to repair and resell used stuffed animals — a sustainable business that keeps plush toys in circulation to reduce waste. The company accepts donations and offers online purchases to encourage second-hand buying.  NBC5

  • Sugarmaker Brian Blaisdell from Blaisdell Maple Farm in Cabot wraps up a busy sugaring season (a local tradition) by clearing snow and keeping his water-cooled pumps running. He and his friends work together to collect sap and meet challenges like freezing water.  Vermont Public

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local student Liah from Canaan will attend Saint Michael’s College this fall after earning a Book Award that covers her tuition and support from VSAC’s GEAR UP program & local mentors. She will study business and join her siblings in college, planning to return to her community after graduating.  VTDigger
  • Enrollment in Burlington schools dropped in October when nearly 100 students left following federal changes that halted most refugee resettlement, and budget cuts caused the removal of 10 staff positions.   • Vermont high school students were honored for their winning PSAs in a statewide contest to fight distracted driving.   • The Vermont Land Use Review Board in Montpelier stopped work on two Act 181 provisions that might have forced landowners into costly permits. House leaders support a repeal bill now in the House Committee on Environment and plan to use rural feedback for future discussions.  NBC5

  • Burke Mountain and its partner ski academy received state approval to test a tarpaulin snow farming system that will cover manmade snow mounds on existing trails in spring 2027 — a measure meant to extend the ski training season amid warming winters.  Vermont Public
