  • Bloom Flower & Home Market will return to Hula at 50 Lakeside Ave on April 26 & 27 with over 85 small businesses from Vermont & seven other states offering flowers, plants, décor, and handmade goods; the event runs from noon to 6 p.m. with a VIP hour beginning at 11 a.m. and tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.  VermontBiz

CRIME NEWS

  • A Burlington man, Jeremy Bald, 35, was arrested after he trespassed at a local business on North Avenue at 3:23 p.m.—he resisted arrest and headbutted an officer—and he is now held on $2,000 bail.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • In Burlington, Judge John Pacht sentenced Joseph Ferlazzo—a New Hampshire man—to 42½ years in prison for fatally shooting his wife during their 2021 anniversary trip in Bolton, and his attorney said he expects to appeal the sentence.  VTDigger
  • Police executed a search warrant at Tovi Mesick’s Jeffersonville home on Wednesday after a retail theft investigation led them to the Burlington suspect, who had already been charged with attempted second-degree murder from a February shooting and violated his 24-hour curfew—dozens of knives, swords, and axes were found and he must appear in Lamoille County court on April 30 for the additional weapons charge.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont officials are considering a new CHIP program that would let small towns fund water and sewer improvements for housing developments using a project-based tax increment financing model — a plan supported by developers and questioned by state auditors. Developer Jonah Richard in Bradford said his proposal to build 15 starter home cottages priced under $300,000 will move forward only if CHIP covers about 10 to 15% of the project's cost, and the House is currently reviewing the measure.  VTDigger
  • State-recognized Abenaki tribal leaders met with legislators at the Montpelier Statehouse on April 23 to defend their identity and oppose revisiting Vermont’s tribal recognition process + they challenged Quebec-based pressures while lawmakers expressed varied support for local groups.  VTDigger

HEALTH NEWS

  • In three years, half of Vermont’s Planned Parenthood clinics closed because rising health care costs, low insurance reimbursements and operational challenges such as flooding made them unsustainable— the St. Johnsbury center will close on June 3. The closures affect low-income and rural residents while telehealth services remain available to meet some needs.  Burlington Free Press
