- ➤ Today, the Hoehl Family Foundation pledged a $200,000 challenge grant — with $100,000 up front and $100,000 once COTS raises an extra $200,000 — to help fund a new Waystation shelter at 58 Pearl St that will serve up to 56 people; COTS will open the updated, safe shelter in December and later turn the old facility into affordable housing in 2026. - ➤ More than 100 local business owners sent an open letter to Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak on May 9 urging city leaders to move a pop-up soup kitchen—restore downtown police presence, boost cleanup programs, outlaw public nudity in the core, and improve signage around construction zones. - ➤ Elijah Compagna, 27, pleaded not guilty in Burlington to a first-degree murder charge for allegedly stabbing a woman he said he met online on Thursday — police reported he admitted the attack and is being held without bail pending a further hearing. VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Burlington City announced today that it will cut 25 positions—resulting in 18 layoffs—as part of an $8 million FY26 budget gap effort, and Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak will share more details at a May 12 press conference. VermontBiz
- ➤ On Friday, a Burlington judge ordered the immediate release of Rumeysa Ozturk—a Tufts University PhD student detained for over six weeks after writing an op-ed—with the court noting there was no evidence to justify her continued detention. Ozturk appeared virtually for her bail hearing and will return to Massachusetts to resume her studies while meeting monthly with a Community Justice Center supervisor as a condition of her release. - ➤ Data from Realtor.com shows that in February, Chittenden County homes sold for a median price of $482,000—up 8.3% from January and 20.5% higher than last February.
