- ➤ The Hoehl Family Foundation pledged a $200,000 challenge grant to help COTS raise matching funds for a new Waystation homeless shelter at 58 Pearl St. in Burlington — half will be given immediately and half once COTS raises an additional $200,000 as the project moves toward its December opening. - ➤ Today, abuse survivors will give victim impact statements in Burlington against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, which filed for bankruptcy in October 2024. The first hearing was held on May 2 in Rutland—more than 60 cases have been settled while at least 30 remain active and 118 survivors filed claims by April 4. NBC5

- ➤ This spring, UVM Nursing added virtual reality simulation to its training program to help student nurses practice their clinical skills in a controlled setting. The program completed 1,138 VR sessions plus 16 new VR headsets were purchased, supporting both undergraduate work and upcoming graduate classes. VermontBiz
- ➤ The University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine said that medical alumna Maureen G. Phipps — a leader in women's health and quality improvement — will speak at its graduation on May 18 at 3:00 p.m. in the Ira Allen Chapel. Graduating student Rachel Thompson from Maynard will also speak at the event as she led volunteer work for Burlington's homeless community and was named for an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. - ➤ Today, UVM announced that its Nursing Department has purchased more than a dozen virtual reality headsets to let students train in real-world medical scenarios using digital avatars—boosting simulation opportunities without expanding physical space. The program has logged over 320 hours of training time and will be added to the graduate curriculum in the fall. NBC5

- ➤ Governor Scott on Tuesday paused the rule that requires manufacturers to sell a growing share of zero-emission vehicles until the end of 2026, citing tariff issues and a shift in burdens to local car dealers—industry representative Jack Vada said the move gives needed flexibility. - ➤ On May 13th, Mayor Mulvany-Stanak held a press conference to discuss Burlington’s 2026 budget gap of $8 million — she outlined plans to close the gap by adding revenue from taxes and cutting services and positions.
