- ➤ Today, the University of Vermont and local partners mark the 25th Annual Spring Move Out Project at Lower Loomis Street from 11 am to 2 pm, where students and residents can swap reusable household items—leftover goods will be donated to local charities. A second event on May 22 at Lower Buell Street will offer trash compacting for items too unusable for the swap with fees applied. VermontBiz
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ South Burlington High School sophomore Momin Waqar competed in the Vermont Brain Bee in February at the University of Vermont and then placed second in the national competition on May 3rd—marking the first time in 16 years that a local student finished in the top three. He earned a $1,000 prize and said he plans to help local high schools start or grow neuroscience clubs. Seven Days
- ➤ UVM will hold its graduation ceremonies from May 16 to May 18 in Burlington, with the main ceremony on May 18 at University Green awarding nearly 3,000 bachelor’s degrees+768 advanced degrees and featuring keynote speaker James M. - ➤ US Senator Peter Welch—joined by Senators Jeff Merkley and Bernie Sanders and Representative Debbie Dingell—introduced the bipartisan End Price Gouging for Medications Act on May 14 to lower prescription drug costs. The bill will require drug companies to sell medications at no more than the lowest price available in 12 comparable developed countries—aiming to end price gouging and help patients afford care. - ➤ At a Burlington court on Wednesday, Chief Judge Christina Reiss heard lawyers argue over the habeas petition of Harvard scientist Kseniia Petrova—detained by ICE since February after not declaring frog embryo samples from France.
