- ➤ Nathan Suter, the former executive director of The Current in Stowe known for his local volunteer work, died from a heart attack on May 13 at age 52. Calling hours are today from 6—8:30 p.m. at Guare Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier and a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral costs has passed its $60,000 goal. Burlington Free Press

- ➤ Gasoline prices in Vermont went down to $3.04 a gallon, 1.5 cents lower than last week, and Burlington prices dropped 5.1 cents to $3.11 today. The national average went up to $3.14 as oil prices rose+GasBuddy will soon share its summer travel survey and gas price forecast. VermontBiz

- ➤ The UVM Board approved the formation of the Food Systems Research Institute on May 16 to spur transdisciplinary research in partnership with the USDA ARS—building on the achievements of its 2019 Food Systems Research Center. The board also passed the FY26 budget and approved construction of a new clinic building and athletic facility to meet growing campus needs. VermontBiz

- ➤ City Council drafted a resolution after more than 100 downtown business owners sent a letter asking for help with safety, traffic, and parking during construction. The proposal asks Public Works to provide a timeline—by June 15—for reopening Main Street to one-way traffic and requires changes—such as improved police presence and a moved free lunch program—to boost downtown support. - ➤ Sen. Bernie Sanders and Vermont lawmakers warned that rising healthcare costs are a major concern as Blue Cross Blue Shield lost over $150 million in four years and asked for another double-digit premium increase — a sign that Vermont’s costs are among the highest in the nation. Lawmakers are working on a bill that would let the Green Mountain Care Board lower insurer reimbursements — an effort aimed at curbing future hikes. NBC5
- ➤ USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service announced $26.5 million in grant funding to boost Vermont’s local food systems by supporting farmers markets, food processors and regional partnerships through three programs with awards from $25,000 to $1 million (applications are due by June 27). - ➤ New data from the Vermont Department of Health shows overdose deaths declined by 22% in 2024, with 183 fatalities recorded compared to 236 in 2023 — fentanyl was involved in 93% of cases and more than 70,000 naloxone doses were distributed to support prevention efforts. VermontBiz
- ➤ Yesterday, the UVM Board of Trustees approved design and funding for a new 14,000 square-foot Center for Health and Wellbeing clinic on the Redstone campus—an accessible facility that will integrate medical, mental health, and allied services for students.
