Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 21st of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • James A. Caffry—an attorney from Waterbury who works for people with special needs—was named the 2025 Theresa Award recipient at the NAELA conference on May 9 in Bellevue, Washington. He has worked nearly twenty years to improve support for individuals with disabilities and his award includes a $5,000 donation to Riverflow Community.  VermontBiz
  • Hunger relief organizations in Vermont are uniting to fight rising food insecurity and potential federal SNAP cuts, which could reach up to 20%—over 300 local partners including Feeding Champlain Valley, Vermont Foodbank, and donors like Hannaford Supermarkets are joining efforts as donations and new campaigns boost support for those in need.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers passed a budget bill that went to the governor and set aside funds for health programs—like $11 million for Brattleboro Retreat and grants to cover hospital claims. They also moved a 340B Protection Bill that caps infusion therapy prices for BCBSVT and advanced bills for health care reform and for boosting the Green Mountain Care Board’s power as further steps are expected this week.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington residents risk having their cars towed for parking mistakes as city rules are strictly enforced; towing fees are steep with a tow costing $75 + storage fees of $30 per day. Residents can avoid extra costs by applying for a permit at the Public Works Department on Pine Street with a government-issued ID, vehicle registration and proof of residence.  Burlington Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 20th, UVM Cancer Center honored investigators, staff, and local patients during Clinical Trials Awareness Day — a day that showed how clinical trials give hope with new treatments. In 2024, the center ran 185 trials and enrolled 427 patients — efforts aimed at bringing life-saving therapies closer to rural communities.  VermontBiz
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) held a press conference on May 19 to say Vermont’s health care system is costly and lacks enough doctors, nurses, dentists, and mental health providers. Lawmakers are looking at new bills that would control hospital prices and bring more clarity to costs (measures aimed at helping Vermonters).  Burlington Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • RunVermont is hosting the 35th M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay on Sunday, May 25 on Burlington’s streets and waterfront with top runners including last year’s men’s open champion and debut runner Nathan Stine.
