- ➤ Residents in South Burlington reported that multiple unlocked vehicles were broken into overnight Wednesday or early Thursday — police warned similar crimes may rise with warmer weather and advised drivers to lock their cars and remove valuables. MyChamplainValley.com
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students in Hinesburg Community Schools’ Arts and Math program had their art shown at a Shelburne Museum exhibit last weekend and learned math through projects like modeling clay shapes and drawing half-portraits. Teachers said the program (created by the Olivia and Leslie Foundation) helps kids see math in everyday things. The Citizen

- ➤ The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation updated wetland maps for over 20% of the state using new aerial images to show wetlands in 107 towns in counties such as Washington, Chittenden, Addison, and Rutland. Public meetings will be held on June 5 at 5:00 p.m. in Brandon and on June 10 at 5:00 p.m. in Montpelier — these sessions follow Act 121 passed in 2024 and let residents submit comments — to help improve flood control and land use planning. - ➤ Data from the state shows that children in residential placements were physically restrained or isolated over 500 times in 2023 and 2024, with some kids as young as 5 kept apart for long periods. Officials and advocates said this count may not reflect every incident and they are working to lower these practices—while noting the lasting harm caused. VTDigger
- ➤ Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak announced plans to appoint Deputy Chief Michael Curtin as the next chief of the Burlington Fire Department. The City Council will review the nomination on June 2 and, if confirmed, Curtin will assume his new role on July 1—while outgoing Chief Michael LaChance serves until June 30. VermontBiz
- ➤ On Wednesday, the Vermont Supreme Court heard arguments in a lawsuit where state auditor Doug Hoffer claimed that Attorney General Charity Clark’s office did not meet its duty to provide written opinions on legal questions related to Burlington’s tax increment financing project (after lower courts dismissed the suit, the court is expected to issue written rulings soon). - ➤ Chittenden County Police officer Jon Marcoux has been named the new regional highway traffic safety coordinator, replacing Lt. Allan A. Fortin who died unexpectedly on Feb. 2 at his Hinesburg home. Marcoux— a 33-year veteran— will use news conferences, public events and social media to raise awareness about drunken driving, distracted driving and proper seatbelt and child safety seat use. - ➤ The Vermont State Housing Authority announced it will stop giving new Section 8 rental vouchers and will remove about 489 of its 3,897 vouchers due to a $1 million budget cut, leaving thousands on a waitlist. The agency will also end special referrals for veterans, youth leaving foster care, and families with housing issues—measures that experts say may reduce access to affordable units. Vermont Public
