CULTURE NEWS

  • Maelyn Slavik (15) of Burlington submitted her Young Writers Project entry 'The Garden Prince’s Freckles' as a creative take on nature that features artwork 'Shining Water' (Juniper Franks, 13) from Fairfield. The online community for teen writers has been sharing local creative work since 2006.  VTDigger
  • Jim Carpenter, a Burlington native and six-year Charlotte resident, became the first contestant from Charlotte to win Jeopardy last Friday—earning $25,601 on Final Jeopardy after a close contest. Although he lost his follow-up appearance today, Carpenter said that competing on the show is a unique experience.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont State Parks opened on Memorial Day weekend and a first-in-the-nation pilot program now offers free entry this summer for lower income Vermonters enrolled in seven assistance programs—this effort is supported by donations and the Vermont Parks Forever partnership. Eligible visitors can use their EBT or request a special card to access the parks.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the USDA declared Vermont unaffected by HPAI after milk tests from 411 dairy farms showed no infected cattle, confirming that Vermont dairy farms produce safe milk & marking the state as the first in New England with this recognition.  VermontBiz
  • Construction crews will cause delays statewide as planned road repairs use alternate one-way traffic and lane closures—disrupting travel on routes like VT 116 in South Burlington, I-89 near Colchester, and the U.S. 2 overpass in Richmond. HEALTH NEWS

  • Dave Stroud, a stroke survivor who had three strokes and was treated at Methodist Hospital in 2021, now volunteers at that same hospital by using his woodworking skills to build therapy devices that help boost survivors' fine motor abilities—he also attends weekly Stroke Chat meetings to share support and encouragement.  NBC5
  • UVM Medical Center faces a trial today at 8:30 a.m. as doctor David N. Krag sues for medical negligence for his late son Peter Krag—a well-known local jazz musician who overdosed in May—alleging that a shift from injections to oral medication without the family’s knowledge increased his risk. The one-week trial will address these claims before Judge Megan J. Shafritz and a jury.  VermontBiz
  • Bill Schubart said nonprofit hospital boards drove up healthcare costs for Vermonters by allowing high administrative spending and waste, and he urged a state audit to check if board actions match their mission.
