ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new UVM-led study shows that underpass tunnels built in Monkton in 2015 reduced road deaths of migrating amphibians by 80.2% overall and by 94% for ground-dwelling species after more than a decade of research. The project began after residents recorded over 1,000 dead amphibians in 2006 and was funded by conservation groups, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, and the Town of Monkton (costing $342,397). Vermont homeowners, who hold the highest percentage of home equity in the nation, may find it easier to tap into their equity as lenders offer more attractive rates — a trend that could boost borrowing in the coming months. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers wound down the session last week after passing health care bills that set a 120% price cap on hospital drugs to begin Jan 1 and approved a 340B amendment with a 20—10 Senate vote. - ➤ On June 2, Vermont lawmakers rejected a pilot program that would let cannabis growers sell directly to consumers at farmers markets—citing concerns that the move might promote cannabis use rather than control it. Some small growers warned the decision could force them out of business, and opponents said they may revisit the issue next year. Vermont Public
