GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Supreme Court ruled on June 10 that Burlington can enforce its short-term rental ordinance from 2022; property owners had sued the city and the decision leaves unanswered questions about grandfathering units — the city has paused some enforcement as a new case in Environmental Court proceeds.  Seven Days
  • Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark and 27 other states filed a lawsuit in federal bankruptcy court yesterday to stop 23andMe from selling personal genetic data without consent. The suit aims to protect the DNA of roughly 15 million customers — including many Vermonters — from being auctioned off in the bankruptcy sale.  VermontBiz
  • Hannah Patten—a mother of two teenagers—lost her shot at a housing voucher when federal rental aid cuts forced Vermont housing authorities to put her on a waitlist and plan to shelve nearly 1,000 vouchers by year’s end; her temporary rental aid, which helped her escape homelessness, expires in August and now leaves her family at risk of losing stable housing.  VTDigger
  • The Vermont Department of Labor selected pilot projects from the Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce and the Addison County Economic Development Corporation to test its new Workforce Expansion Program, a two-year initiative designed to strengthen regional workforce systems. The program will provide each region with a full-time Workforce Expansion Coordinator to support local employers, educators, and community partners in addressing labor shortages.  VermontBiz

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. David Schneider at UVM Medical Center developed a new biomarker test that measures a protein on platelets to help doctors predict which patients are at risk for repeat heart attacks and dangerous bleeding from blood thinners—early studies and a large trial confirmed its promise.
