COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 44th annual Father's Day Fishing Derby on Lake Champlain will run from 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 4 p.m. Monday as families and over 5,000 participants from 30 states gather to compete in nine fishing categories—catches will be weighed at 13 stations along both New York and Vermont sides—while registration remains open at 18 locations.  NBC5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cara Tobin—chef and co-owner of Honey Road—is a finalist for the Outstanding Restaurateur category at the James Beard Awards, and she and co-owner and general manager Allison Gibson attended the ceremony in Chicago on June 10. This nomination recognizes Tobin’s long dedication to running one of Burlington’s most popular restaurants.  Burlington Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Vermont produced 3.06 million gallons of maple and topped the country for the third year in a row as the USDA reported last Thursday. Agriculture Secretary Anson Tebbetts said farmers handled an inconsistent season—using 8.35 million taps to yield nearly the same output as last year—while maple syrup values rose.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Burlington superintendent Tom Flanagan said crews are making steady progress on the new high school at Institute Road after they found asbestos under the old building's foundation, and the project remains on time and on budget for students to move in by the 2026 school year. Flanagan also said officials will work to bring back the tradition of ringing the iconic bell at graduation—an important Burlington custom.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Phil Scott signed a law late yesterday—putting further restrictions on PFAS in firefighting gear, dental floss, cleaning products, and fluorine-treated containers to reduce health risks.  VermontBiz
  • Advocacy groups and the ACLU said Governor Phil Scott vetoed the V-HEARTH bill, which would have changed Vermont’s hotel-motel program into a local community shelter system, a move they believe weakens plans to address homelessness. The governor vetoed the bill Wednesday after approving the funding in the budget, and advocates worry that upcoming federal cuts may further challenge shelter capacity + they call for a stronger focus on local solutions.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • Vermont passed a law that will take full effect on Jan. 1 and stops hospitals in the 340B program from charging more than 120% of the average sales price for prescriptions in office or clinic settings. Lawmakers say the rule will help lower costs for patients and lets hospitals ask for a cap change if care is hurt—keeping prices fair—without raising rates for drugs that already cost less than the limit.  NBC5

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Vermont Principals’ Association set schedules for 13 high school spring sports championships with games in softball, baseball, lacrosse and ultimate starting today and running through June 16 — all streamed live on the NFHS Network. The schedule lists game times, matchups and season records so fans can track key contests.  Burlington Free Press
  • On June 12th, a sold-out Virtue Field crowd roared as Vermont Green F.C. beat Flower City 1872 4-0 in an exhibition match—marking a historic moment for Vermont women's soccer. The team will play one more game on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Virtue Field.  NBC5
