  • SSgt. Felix Shostack, a World War II veteran once missing in action, was laid to rest on Saturday with a funeral at Saint Bridget’s Church in West Rutland and burial at Saint Dominic’s Cemetery in Proctor—family and military investigations confirmed his identity after his remains were discovered in northern France and verified by DNA testing.  NBC5

  • Philip Morris International Inc.'s U.S. business announced that Jody Sunna will become Chief Communications Officer effective September 1 with overall responsibility for its corporate, regulatory and civil society communications—Sunna brings over 15 years of leadership experience and is originally from Charlotte.  VermontBiz
  • Switchback Beer Garden in Burlington rebranded as Switchback Beer Garden — Smokehouse to offer a new menu featuring house-smoked meats like brisket, pulled pork, and St. Louis ribs along with Southern sides and vegetarian options. CRIME NEWS

  • According to Migrant Justice, two people were arrested by Border Patrol agents in Richford Friday morning, and later protesters gathered outside the office on St. Albans Road—spurred by calls from a No Kings protest at Waterfront Park—to pressure ICE for the detained migrants as officers warned them to stop.  NBC5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Governor Scott signed bill S.127 to start the CHIP program that will let towns use Tax Increment Financing to pay for water, sewer, and road projects — the new program is set to launch in January and will support community needs. The department newsletter also outlines projects such as Randolph’s new large childcare center, a workforce housing opening in St. Johnsbury, weekly startup support at Hula, and leadership changes at the Vermont Training Program and STEP.  VermontBiz

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vermont lawmakers reached a tentative deal on an education reform bill that would change school funding—by redrawing district boundaries, setting class size minimums, and switching to a fixed foundation formula. The bill needs approval from the House, Senate, and Gov. Phil Scott, and its key changes will take effect next summer and in 2029.  NBC5
