CRIME NEWS

  • A St. Albans woman, Ellen Willson, was charged with grossly negligent operation with death resulting and with serious bodily injury after she crossed the center line and caused a fatal head-on collision on U.S. Route 2 near Savage Point Road in North Hero around 1:47 p.m. Sunday—one driver died on the scene while another was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center as the highway remained closed for over two hours.  NBC5
  • U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested migrant worker activist Jose Ignacio De La Cruz and his stepdaughter Heidi Perez in Richford on June 14 for suspicious border activity and failure to follow orders—both now face imminent deportation as they are held in custody.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers approved bill H.480 banning personal electronic devices in public schools and private schools with public funding from the start of the 2026-27 school year, exempting students who need devices for special education or homelessness services—Gov. Phil Scott is expected to sign the law soon as parent support grows nationwide.  Vermont Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Charity Clark said Vermont will get up to $21.85 million from a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family when the court approves it—local governments will follow instructions after a bankruptcy court hearing in the coming days to join the settlement for addiction support programs.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington city council unanimously approved renaming Church Street to Canada Street for the summer to welcome Canadians amid political tensions, and the change will run through Labor Day. The measure assigns $3,000 for bilingual signage and plans an official unveiling in the coming weeks.  Seven Days
  • Lawmakers approved nearly $14 million in tax cuts on Monday that will lower taxes for low-income parents, seniors on Social Security, and military veterans next year. The measure expands child and earned income tax credits — a step in Gov Phil Scott’s long effort to exempt most military pensions from state income taxes.  Vermont Public
  • Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark joined 54 other state attorneys general on Monday to sign on to a $7.4 billion opioid settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. If bankruptcy court approves the deal on June 18, Vermont will receive up to $21.85 million to support opioid prevention, treatment and recovery programs (15% to the state, 15% to municipalities, and 70% to the state fund).  VTDigger
  • Legislators adjourned on June 16 after passing an education reform bill that will change how K-12 schools are governed and funded — the bill now heads to Gov. Scott for his signature. They also passed measures on campaign finance, school cellphone bans, housing and health care — and will reconvene on Jan. 6 or sooner if federal funding cuts occur.  VTDigger
