COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Building Burlington’s Future launched Tuesday in Burlington to help improve public safety, housing, the economy and community well-being. Executive Director Sam Donnelly said the non-partisan group, which has former Mayor Peter Clavelle and Ernie Pomerleau on its board, will work with residents using a grassroots approach — a plan to bring practical solutions to local challenges.  NBC5

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said that on Monday, June 23, at North Beach a vehicle struck a pedestrian who is in critical condition after the operator said the man had brandished a firearm—911 calls also mentioned a possible stabbing or shooting.  MyChamplainValley.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Partizanfilm, a nonprofit art house theater, will open this fall in a converted yoga studio at 230 College Street in downtown Burlington—showing independent and foreign films seven days a week. Five local residents bought the vacant condo and plan to run the cinema democratically while using the lobby as a social area with a bookstore and cafe.  VTDigger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vermont State University graduated 414 nurses in May, with most testing for licensure in Vermont while 713 students from every county participated in the program. The school offers many paths—from a practical nursing certificate to advanced degrees—to help meet the state's need for health care professionals.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 2020 Vermont law banned plastic bags and cut their use by 91% while paper bags rose by 6%, and a survey found about 70% of residents supported the change—research shows that clear rules and simple fees spurred Vermonters to switch to reusable bags.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington’s Main Street will open for two-way traffic on nights and weekends starting June 27—eastbound and westbound travel will resume between Pine and Church streets, and the block from Church to South Winooski Avenue will reopen on August 1. City Council approved the plan to help downtown businesses even though it adds $600,000 and a few months to the construction schedule, with work expected to finish before November.  Burlington Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study from UVM Larner College of Medicine found 95% of children treated with epinephrine for allergic reactions can be discharged safely within 2 hours—shortening the current 4-6 hour observation period. Researchers analyzed over 5,600 emergency visits and observed that only a small number of patients needed a repeat dose after the initial injection.  VermontBiz
  • Vermont Department of Health reported that COVID-19 hospitalizations remained very low statewide, though Montpelier wastewater shows a moderate level of the virus and high norovirus markers — Essex Junction and South Burlington continue to show lower virus levels. The department also noted that Health Commissioner Mark A. Levine retired in March after leading through the pandemic, and a new RSV prevention medication has helped lower hospital admissions for babies.  VermontBiz
