Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 30th of June.

CULTURE NEWS

  • French Heritage Day returned to the Winooski Farmers Market on Sunday to mark 20 years of celebrating the city’s French and American ties with music, baking contests, and history displays. Organizers said the event brought people together—despite a 31% drop in Canadian visitors at the border last month due to tighter travel rules.  NBC5
  • Vermont artist and teacher Will Kasso Condry won the 2025 Herb Lockwood Prize in the Arts and received a $10,000 award at a reception on June 28 at the BCA Center in Burlington—this prize honors artists who uplift their communities through creative work. He is known for his large murals that celebrate Black identity and bring local artists together.  Burlington Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Weekly unemployment claims in Vermont rose to 648 for the week ending June 21—an increase of 343 from the previous week and 302 fewer than last year. EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Senator Thomas Chittenden and State Representative Casey Toof explained that education transformation bill H.454 was passed by both chambers and signed by Governor Phil Scott—this act will change Vermont’s education governance, quality, and finance systems while further benchmarks must be met before lawmakers return in January.   NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Since 1900, Vermont has warmed by 2°F and received 21% more rain, so farmers are changing how they grow food. Local growers now plant peaches that rarely freeze, rice with ducklings controlling pests, and saffron that lasts for years – all to cope with more floods and droughts.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Thomas Chittenden and Representative Casey Toof discussed the new housing bill S. 127 during an NBC 5 interview—this bill will use the CHIP program to boost housing development while easing regulatory constraints. They explained that Governor Scott vetoed the Hotel-Motel emergency program, citing concerns that it would address only the symptoms of Vermont’s housing crisis.  NBC5
  • Vermont lawmakers passed several laws that will take effect July 1 and change rules for used car sales, library book policies, job ads, food producers, safe leave, and school safety as well as allow in-state tuition and aid for undocumented students. The laws let food producers earn up to $30,000 before needing a permit and require used car dealers to provide written disclosures — while job postings must show salary ranges and schools must form threat teams to address violent behavior.  Vermont Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • Roger King, the Vermont club pro at Sugarbush Resort Golf Club, is hosting his third King Golf Challenge on July 9 to raise funds for Vermont Cancer Patient Support Foundation and Vineyard Havens—following his wife Erin’s breast cancer diagnosis in 2022 and treatment, the couple has raised over $40,000 so far. Former athletes Ronnie Lippett, Max Lane and Jim Kaat will join him in the 36‐hole event to help support families facing cancer-related challenges.  NBC5
