CRIME NEWS

  • Vermont State Police have identified trooper Peter Romeo as the officer who fired his service weapon on Monday in Putney at Putney Landing Apartments, where 55-year-old Scott Garvey was fatally shot, and investigators are reviewing the case while asking anyone with information to contact state police — updates will be provided as the investigation continues.  VermontBiz
  • On June 14, Border Patrol officers stopped a van in Richford after an officer saw suspicious behavior—29-year-old Jose Ignacio 'Nacho' De La Cruz, who was delivering groceries near the border, and his stepdaughter Heidi Perez have since alleged they were injured and racially profiled during the stop while their bail hearings remain delayed as ICE holds them.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday’s Hurricane Flooding Awareness Day reminded us that inland communities face heavy rains and flash floods — one in four hurricane deaths happens away from the coast. Forecasts say more storms will come in over the next few days, urging everyone to stay alert.  NBC5
  • Vermont experienced severe floods in July 2023 when a storm billed to occur once in a century killed one person, damaged over 150 roads and left 44 mobile homes unlivable—many communities still face cleanup challenges. In July 2024, another flood killed two drivers, forced dozens of evacuations and caused millions in damage, prompting officials to assess infrastructure and plan further recovery efforts.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 10, 2024, Vermonters remembered the severe floods of July 10, 2023 while bracing for more flooding from Hurricane Beryl’s remnants—Governor Phil Scott visited Lyndon, helped a construction crew load dirt on Red Village Road, and local officials said the road will be repaved in August as rebuilding continues. This review of past floods comes as state leaders reinforce efforts to restore communities affected by repeated water damage.  MyChamplainValley.com
  • A portion of Bike Path 127 was closed for construction beginning Wednesday, July 9 to fix the bridge planking, according to Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront. The closure was set for weekdays (7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) while the path remained open on weekends for out and back use only.  MyChamplainValley.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Howard Center announced a strategic realignment that will cut 57 positions and change programs to reduce costs due to low cash reserves.
