- ➤ Sen. Bernie Sanders welcomed the Education Department's release on July 18 that provided Vermont with $6.5 million—supporting nearly 100 afterschool and summer programs for 11,000 students—as part of a nationwide disbursement of $1.3 billion prompted by bipartisan pressure on withheld education funding. - ➤ The Essex Development Board voted 4—2 on July 17 to reject Scannell Properties’ application for an Amazon distribution facility at Saxon Hill at Essex High School, deciding based on current zoning rules and the plan’s merits. - ➤ Vermont received a $22.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to replace the nearly 100-year-old Winooski River Bridge connecting Burlington and Winooski—officials said the new bridge will have extra traffic lanes, a shared path, and improved drainage.
