  • On July 16th, Saint Michael’s College received a $240,736 grant from a private family foundation to launch its new Emergency Services Program—designed to give students degrees in emergency care and expand local training with service providers. The program builds on the school’s work in fire and rescue and will help fill growing job needs in emergency management.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report shows Vermont will likely miss its legally-binding carbon reduction targets for 2025 and 2030 while a judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by a conservation group—further revisions to the Climate Action Plan are expected as the state works to cut fossil fuel emissions.  VTDigger
  • Researchers from UVM, environmentalists and activists examined microplastics in Lake Champlain last week aboard the vessel Marcelle Melosira — they found plastic nurdles, foam fragments and fibers from dock floats, packaging and take-out containers. The Lake Champlain Basin Marine Debris Coalition has launched a debris tracker app to gather data that will guide policy changes aimed at reducing pollution.  Seven Days

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria (a U.S. citizen) was detained for five hours at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport after returning from Nicaragua with his husband. Officials questioned him in various rooms (seizing his phone and computer and separating him from his husband) and later revoked his Global Entry without explanation.  Seven Days
  • Esther Tekele Ngoy, a 24-year-old Congolese woman now home in Burlington with her family and two-year-old son, said she was forced to sign papers she did not understand and was denied legal help while she was held in ICE custody, and ICE said she lied about her marital status for her Green Card (her next hearing is set for Aug. 28).  NBC5
  • Senator Peter Welch introduced the WIPE Act and the Health Records Enhancement Act to protect veterans by ending burn pits and updating waste disposal systems. HEALTH NEWS

  • DVHA Commissioner DaShawn Groves said that Vermont leads the nation in health coverage with 97% enrollment and a drop in the underinsured rate from 40% (in 2021) to 31% today. The department enrolled many Vermonters in lower-cost plans (using enhanced federal premium tax credits) but faces challenges when those subsidies expire at the end of 2025 as health care costs continue to rise.  VermontBiz
  • Rick Vincent, CFO of UVM Health Network, was named one of the top 189 hospital and health system CFOs for 2025 by Becker’s Hospital Review for his work unifying administrative functions and controlling costs. His leadership drove a $175 million financial improvement from fiscal year 2022 to 2024 — reflecting his service since 1994 — and supported community projects such as staff housing and childcare.  Burlington Free Press
