BUSINESS NEWS

  • Food Connects Food Hub earned cGMP certification with a 99% audit score from ASI Food Safety + expanded into 10,000 square feet of new warehouse space to meet federal standards, positioning the hub to serve large institutional buyers like UVM through Sodexo beginning in fall. CRIME NEWS

  • Burlington police arrested Nathan Couture (27) on Tuesday after he used a loaded handgun to break up an argument on Bank Street near Church Street and charged him with aggravated assault while he is held until he appears before a judge.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Winooski School District Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was detained for nearly five hours at Houston customs on July 21 while returning from visiting family in Nicaragua and had his Global Entry pass revoked without clear explanation—local leaders are now calling for a full investigation into his treatment and reaffirming support for the district's diverse community.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Community Broadband Board finished accepting bids on August 5 to bring high-speed internet to every underserved address using fiber—hybrid-fiber coaxial—and low earth orbit satellite through the BEAD program. The board will now evaluate the submissions and send the winning bids for federal approval to ensure efficient use of Vermont’s $229 million allocation.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington city councilors voted Monday night to keep the tax on meals and alcohol at 2.5% through July 2026 to manage a budget deficit—this measure passed 10-1 even though some councilors worried it might discourage local business investment.  NBC5
  • Burlington's Main Street will reopen on nights and weekends starting Aug. 15 after months of construction, the mayor said at a City Council meeting to help local businesses. The reopening is weather dependent and a meeting with business owners is set for Aug. 19—city leaders including the police and fire chiefs will attend.  NBC5
  • Secretary of Administration Sarah Clark released June’s revenue results showing that the General Fund ended the fiscal year about 2.4% above target despite a 5.3% shortfall in monthly receipts, while the Transportation Fund lagged and the Education Fund met its target. State economists forecast that the General Fund will grow in FY26 and FY27 (by $77.2 million and $85 million respectively) amid federal policy uncertainties (Transportation and Education Funds are expected to decline).  VermontBiz

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 5th, Mamava & Medela released the 2025 State of Breastfeeding Survey showing that almost 3,000 parents were dedicated to breastfeeding but faced significant barriers in workplaces and public spaces. The survey found only 44% felt supported at work and many had to pump in vehicles, highlighting the need for better lactation accommodations.  VermontBiz
