- ➤ Switchback Brewing Co. won a Double Gold Medal at the North American Bourbon & Whiskey Competition for its Essential Vermont Malt Whiskey—judges in a double-blind contest gave it unanimous top ratings. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police arrested three juveniles — names withheld — after a group assault on Church Street near City Hall on Monday afternoon, and a person was seriously injured when a gun was displayed during the attack. NBC5
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Vermont was ranked the best for healthy school lunches—scoring 81.68 out of 100—because many schools have edible gardens and over 60% of school food authorities offer free fruits and vegetables. A 2023 law provides free lunches for all students, and a proposal by Governor Phil Scott to cut the program was blocked. Burlington Free Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Beech leaf disease is spreading in five Vermont counties and is threatening beech trees that support local wildlife (the Jericho Research Forest marks the northernmost point of the outbreak). Researchers are testing chemical traps and treatments to slow the nematodes that cause the disease. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ The Green Mountain Club conserved a 12-acre property at Deer Camp in Johnson that protects 300 feet of the Long Trail in the state forest. The land is managed by the state and is part of a project that will help secure all 272 miles of the trail — a step to keep Vermont’s natural paths open for everyone. Burlington Free Press
- ➤ Dry weather has forced farms in Vermont to buy extra feed as pastures remain too dry for grazing, which is putting financial pressure on dairy and livestock operations. Officials warn that more frequent extreme weather events will increase these costs further — a challenge for farmers who cannot set their own prices. NBC5
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Vermont increased the maximum funds available through the Money Follows the Person program from $2,500 to $9,000 as of Aug. 1 to help cover one-time moving expenses for those leaving hospitals or skilled nursing facilities and enrolled in the Choices for Care Medicaid program—assistance that covers costs like home modifications and medical equipment. - ➤ Dartmouth Health Neurologist Elijah Stommel said that cyanobacteria in Lake Champlain has led to recent Burlington beach closures by exposing swimmers through the skin, by drinking water, or by breathing in aerosols—research shows that long-term exposure may raise the risk of ALS and other diseases. Dartmouth researchers are now testing local waters, including the east shore of Lake Champlain, to learn more about these health risks. NBC5
