- ➤ Dan Stinebring and Lynn Powell sailed their Aloha 34 sailboat — covering 740 miles in three weeks along canals and lakes from Ohio to Burlington. The retired professors encountered friendly locals on the journey and plan to stay in Burlington for several weeks before returning home. Seven Days
- ➤ A volunteer group meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace — organized by Kason Hudman, they pick up trash and used needles to keep downtown clean while Seven Days deputy publisher Cathy Resmer joined the effort. Seven Days

- ➤ A Pennsylvania man was killed on Monday evening when his pickup truck left the roadway on I-89 in Milton—he was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle before first responders arrived. NBC5

- ➤ The Vermont Captive Insurance Association named Ian Davis as its new president in Burlington — replacing Kevin Mead, who retired in June. Davis brings over a decade of insurance experience from roles at M&T Bank and the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community — and he will lead efforts to strengthen the association. VermontBiz

- ➤ The city is replacing a wood carving in Battery Park that stood for 42 years, and Abenaki from Québec say the new piece is not real and is hurtful. City leaders will talk about it at a council meeting on August 25th—checking the statue’s base before they decide. Seven Days

- ➤ Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas said on August 13 that her office does not plan to share voter data with federal officials—state law and the Constitution protect elections. - ➤ Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said Burlington is facing a crisis with homelessness that grew after the pandemic—local programs ease some burdens but state aid is urgently needed to expand shelter and treatment capacity.
