COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the Champlain Valley Fair, officials said that on Thursday, Vermont Foodbank Day brought in 9,218 pounds of donated food—more than last year's 8,960 pounds. The fair has collected 71,000 pounds of food over the last ten years and runs this weekend with live shows.  NBC5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were recovering after a late-night rollover crash at the intersection of Willard and Pearl in Burlington — police said one vehicle flipped onto its side and injury details remain unknown.  NBC5

CRIME NEWS

  • Eva Vekos, Addison County’s state attorney, asked a judge in Chittenden County to drop her DUI charge because her lawyer said the evidence is too weak—prosecutors say her actions during her January 2024 arrest near a homicide scene show proof of wrongdoing and that letting the charge go will hurt public trust—while a hearing is set for October 1.  Seven Days
  • The Vermont Supreme Court upheld Aita Gurung's conviction for first-degree murder of his wife with a meat cleaver and second-degree attempted murder of his mother-in-law—he will serve at least 27 years in prison.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Supreme Court ruled Friday that Vermont holds jurisdiction over a case against Instagram—alleging the tech giant engaged in unfair practices targeting teens—so state Attorney General Charity Clark can continue the suit. The suit, filed in October 2023, claims Meta misled young consumers and violated the Vermont Consumer Protection Act.  VTDigger
  • Social Security benefits in Vermont will be paid on Sept. 10, Sept. 17 and Sept. 24 based on birth dates — those who began benefits before May 1997 are set to receive their payment on Sept. 3, and Supplemental Security Income checks went out on Aug. 29 because Labor Day caused an earlier release — with some accounts showing reduced amounts due to previous overpayments.  Burlington Free Press
  • State employees will be required to work in the office at least three days a week starting Dec. 1, after many shifted to remote work during the pandemic. Administration Secretary Sarah Clark emailed staff to boost in-person teamwork — though the state employees association strongly opposes the plan.  Vermont Public
