CRIME NEWS

  • Alfred 'Wish Kid' Wisher pleaded guilty to the 2019 murder of 28-year-old Khyann Jones in Burlington and was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday after his plea withdrawal was denied—he shot Jones in the head after an argument over a cheating accusation and was captured following a four-month manhunt in Georgia while already serving a 50-year federal sentence.  NBC5
  • Shelburne police sergeant Kyle Kapitanski, who struck cyclist Sean Hayes near Shelburne Road during a rainstorm in November 2024, pleaded guilty to negligent operation of a vehicle with death resulting—receiving two years probation and a mandatory restorative justice process—while Hayes' family pursues a civil negligence lawsuit.  Seven Days

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gasoline prices in Burlington increased today to $3.14 per gallon, up 1.6 cents from last week and still 26.6 cents lower than a year ago—while the statewide average rose 6 cents to $3.16 per gallon with rates varying from $2.85 to $3.28 per gallon.  VermontBiz

  • Champlain Valley school leaders previewed a $13 million bond proposal to repair school facilities such as replacing the gym floor at Williston Central School and the roof at Champlain Valley Union High School—if the measure passes at Town Meeting Day, officials will share more details on budgets and LED light upgrades.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shelburne Farms permanently protected 66 acres at Windmill Hill on August 14 for farming and education — the move, supported by a $950,000 grant from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and additional local donations, preserves productive soils, scenic views, and a trail network for public use.  VermontBiz
  • Livestock farmers in Vermont have been struggling as a summer drought dried fields, forcing them to buy extra feed and haul water for their cows—some spending tens of thousands more to keep their dairy operations running.   • Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak signed a new contract with the local police union yesterday morning—boosting pay, adding time off, and limiting overtime while easing the path for lateral hires.
