  • The Vermont Women’s Fund will host its Annual Celebration on Sept 30th at The Flynn in Burlington—featuring keynote speaker Reshma Saujani and a performance by local singer Myra Flynn, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will highlight new grantmaking initiatives and partnerships as the organization begins its fourth decade of service.  VermontBiz

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shelburne Museum celebrated 70 years on land of the Ticonderoga—a historic 220-foot steamboat that will be repaired and replaced in parts as original materials fade—and held events September 11-14 to honor its storied past.  VTDigger
  • Vermont musician Ali McGuirk released her third album Watertop on Sept 12 which talks about big topics like love, death, God and money. She will perform at Higher Ground Showcase Lounge in South Burlington on Oct 4 at 7:30 p.m. — tickets cost $15 — to connect with local fans.  Burlington Free Press
  • This week the Young Writers Project featured 17-year-old Gretchen Wertlieb’s poem 'Ode to the simply whimsical and the unnecessarily dramatic' from South Burlington—paired with Elise Cournoyer’s artwork 'Essence of Summer' from Richmond; the online showcase has highlighted teen art since 2006.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists are working on Mount Mansfield tonight to attach tiny GPS backpacks (GPS) to Bicknell’s thrush as they race to slow the bird’s decline caused by warming temperatures that shrink its balsam fir habitat. They hope the new data will guide efforts to protect the songbird’s winter grounds in the Caribbean and ease a 4% yearly drop in numbers.  Vermont Public

  • A Vermont state report outlines planned road construction on interstates and highways for the week of September 15 with lane closures, reduced speed limits and flagged alternating traffic patterns in areas including Colchester, Fairlee and Woodstock—motorists are urged to allow extra travel time.  VermontBiz
  • Vermont's Commerce Secretary Lindsay Kurrle said the state needs to build more homes as current plans cover only 12,000 units while demand will exceed 40,000 by 2030—she urged lawmakers to modernize regulations and lower costs to boost private investment and keep communities thriving.  VermontBiz

  • After missing a game due to injury, David Ismail returned on Sept. 13 and scored the lone goal as UVM soccer beat Akron—his goal helped secure the team’s win.  Burlington Free Press
  • UVM men's soccer team received championship rings for the 2024 season at a celebration at Halverson's Upstreet Cafe in downtown Burlington on Sunday night and launched 'Cats Pride,' a new subscription service offering special perks to fans—coach Rob Dow said team supporters asked for more ways to connect. The team, fresh off a 1-0 win over University of Akron, will face Hofstra University at Virtue Field on Tuesday.  NBC5
