COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At collective gardens in Burlington, local gardeners work together to plant, harvest, and share produce—donating extras to food pantries and building strong community ties. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business partners Lenny’s Shoe and Apparel, Darn Tough Vermont, and Smartwool teamed up to donate over $19,000 in socks and cash to local agencies supporting low-income families during their 15th annual charity sock sale from August 28–30—benefiting groups like Cathedral Square, Capstone Community Action, the Samaritan House, and JCEO.  VermontBiz

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Burlington School District is raising bus driver wages from nearly $18 to $30 an hour and offering paid training to help people get their commercial driver license. The district plans to add at least four drivers to keep local routes running smoothly — a move agreed upon after union negotiations.  NBC5
  • At UVM, Professor Yolanda Flores calls on the community to learn more about Hispanic American history as National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept.15 to Oct.15—this time also marks the independence days of several Latin American countries and highlights lessons from past civil rights movements.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Department of Fish — Wildlife reminded hunters that the November rifle season in 2025 allows bucks only while new rules in 2026 will let hunters harvest antlerless deer. Officials clarified that current regulations remain unchanged and printed rule books can be found where licenses are sold.  NBC5
  • U.S. Senator Peter Welch joined Representatives Marilyn Strickland and Alma Adams to reintroduce the Capital for Beginning Farmers and Ranchers Act—legislation that would direct the Farm Service Agency to launch a multi-year loan pilot program for new farmers. The bill seeks to ease high start-up costs and is backed by several farming groups.  VermontBiz
  • Governor Scott has declared September Vermont Loves Shelter Animals Month—aiming to maintain Vermont’s no-kill record—by urging residents to adopt, foster, and support local lifesaving programs.  VermontBiz

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Vermont Health Network is expanding its paramedic training program—bringing hands-on lab sessions and a 100% placement rate—to improve emergency care in rural areas. The Burlington-based classroom led by Sarah Lamb enrolled 28 students and earned final accreditation in May.  VermontBiz
  • Vermont regulators approved budgets for 14 hospitals for the fiscal year beginning October 1—UVM Medical Center saw its allowed revenue from commercial insurers cut by about $88.5 million to help control rising costs; smaller cuts were made at Central Vermont Medical Center and Porter Hospital.  VTDigger
