  • Residents on Tracy Road have been finding six-by-six-foot holes in their yards that date back to when old gray water wells were covered up—now decayed railroad ties are causing the pits to open and pose risks.   • Jerry Greenfield resigned yesterday as a cofounder of Ben and Jerry’s because he alleged that Unilever had silenced the company’s political values—he said he could no longer remain with a brand that no longer reflected its founding principles.  VTDigger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shelburne Farms, once a private estate, is now a nonprofit that offers hands-on lessons about farming and nature to everyone. Its renovated Coach Barn will open this fall as an energy-efficient learning center—providing teachers and students with a new way to learn about the environment.  Seven Days
  • Vermont teens are waiting long for driver ed classes due to a shortage of qualified teachers and tight school budgets—forcing many to choose expensive private programs or delay getting their licenses, which heightens safety risks.  Seven Days
  • The University of Vermont was ranked as the second most liberal college in America in Niche’s 2026 college rankings – student reviews measured political leanings but no New England school appeared among the top conservative choices, with Boston University ranking eighth.   • South Burlington school district named Joe Clark interim superintendent last week after Violet Nichols resigned. He said his main focus is listening to community concerns and building relationships while he draws on 30 years of education experience from Ohio — including 14 years as a superintendent—and will lead the district through the school year as the board starts a national search for a permanent leader in November.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists say the drought is set to change fall foliage across the state. Experts explain that trees may drop leaves sooner and show less bright colors, so visitors should check different spots (like dry slopes and lush valleys) for the best views.  VTDigger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont lawmakers plan to consider a bill to allow balcony solar installations during the 2026 legislative session. Sen. Anne Watson said the proposal would cut red tape by removing interconnection rules—making it easier for residents to save on energy and lower carbon emissions.  VTDigger
  • Gov. Phil Scott signed an executive order Wednesday to speed up new housing production in Vermont by rolling back old regulations and instructing state agencies to process permits faster—he said the steps are meant to help build at least 40,000 new homes by 2030.  VTDigger
  • The Department for Children and Families has begun a confidential restorative process for former Woodside staff to discuss the abuse issues and closure in 2020—only staff may share their insights, and the $150,000 effort will lead to a report that guides plans for a future secure facility. The process started over the summer, and DCF Commissioner Chris Winters is leaving on September 22 for a new state role.  Seven Days
  • South Burlington introduced new bus routes along Market Street on August 25 to move more riders and save money, and the city will celebrate the changes with a ribbon cutting at the Allard Square bus stop on Wednesday. Green Mountain Transit now schedules service every 15 minutes between South Burlington and downtown Burlington — a move that speeds travel to UVM and the hospital while cutting costs by about $300,000 a year.  NBC5
