Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 23rd of September.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • AGC/VT held a Toolbox Talk that stressed teamwork for job-site safety by urging workers to help each other and report hazards, and it shared real examples from employees who watch out for one another—emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility. AGC/VT also announced it won the Howard J. Mock Award again, an honor that highlights its commitment to improving safety and workforce development.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State regulators put a fire ban in every county on Monday as drought and dry leaves raised the risk of wildfires—town fire wardens stopped issuing burn permits and the Green Mountain National Forest limited fires to designated areas. The forecast shows up to 2 inches of rain from Tuesday evening to Friday, which will slow the drought but not end it.  Vermont Public
  • Vermont will see fewer hours of daylight this fall as clocks set back one hour on November 2—Burlington will experience an earlier sunset at 4:13 p.m. in mid-December and the shortest day on December 21 with only 8 hours and 50 minutes of light.  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont’s fall foliage is changing quickly as dry, warm days and cool nights speed up the color shift, with satellite data showing moderate colors along the Green Mountains and high colors in parts of southern Vermont. With little rain forecast, trees may become bare sooner than in past years—NBC5 will continue to track the updates.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont used cruise ship diplomacy last week when state and Quebec officials met on Lake Memphremagog—bringing leaders together to ease strained business ties caused by U.S. tariffs and uncertainties. Officials stressed that rebuilding confidence requires strong personal bonds—especially as local firms face economic challenges.  Vermont Public
  • The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets has opened several grant programs for schools and farms including the Farm to School and Early Childhood Grant with applications open until October 29 and the Farm to Institution Market Development Grant running from September 30 to October 31—a regenerative livestock farming grant is also available for select counties. A medicinal herb workshop is held today and a dairy workshop is scheduled for October 1 in Addison.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney Stanak and the Burlington Electric Department are boosting EV rebates to $5,000—$5,700 for income qualified customers to offset the federal tax credit lapse on September 30 and support the city’s Net Zero Energy goal. Local officials and fifth graders backed the move, and the incentives will be available until funds run out or through the end of 2026.  VermontBiz
  • South Burlington’s plan to build a new walk-bike bridge over I-89 has been delayed because rising construction costs pushed bids over budget. City officials are adjusting plans and seeking extra funds while construction will start in 2026 and be completed by 2028—this project will connect Williston Road to Dorset Street to help more people walk and bike safely.  NBC5
  • Today, state lawmakers directed $50,000 that will be matched by an extra $50,000 from Press Forward Vermont to create the Local Civic Journalism Awards and offer up to $10,000 to news outlets that report on local issues. The nomination period runs from Sept 22 to Oct 29 at noon—winners will be chosen by an independent panel and announced in November.  VermontBiz
  • Imelda Muller, a University of Vermont alumnus and former Navy lieutenant, was named to NASA’s 2025 astronaut candidate class at a ceremony at the Johnson Space Center on Monday—she is one of 10 selected from over 8,000 applicants and will train for nearly two years to support missions to low Earth orbit, the moon, and Mars.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • About 30,000 Vermonters who buy insurance through Vermont Health Connect risk losing nearly $65 million in federal subsidies if Congress does not extend the enhanced credits before open enrollment begins on Nov. 1—this change will cause premiums to more than double and may force many to forgo coverage.  VTDigger
