  • Vermont cannabis dispensaries have joined a new Cannatrail passport program that lets visitors collect stamps at 23 shops without a purchase and win a prize when the booklet is full. JB Sugar said the program will boost local tourism and help normalize cannabis in our towns this fall.  Seven Days

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former Chief Justice Jeffrey Amestoy has published a book about the 1926 murder of Cecelia Gullivan in Windsor — she served as the treasurer for Cone Automatic Machine company and was killed at her home. Police arrested machinist John Winters, who was sentenced to death for the crime — a detail that marked a rare moment in Vermont legal history.  VTDigger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Heritage Aviation hosted its Girls in Aviation event for local students from Saint Alban's City School on Sept. 20—students shadowed aircraft mechanics, safety staff and air traffic controllers to learn about aviation careers. The company said the event helped inspire young women in a field facing labor shortages.  NBC5
  • Saint Michael’s College received $120,000 from the Freeman Foundation to fund its Global Citizenship International Internship Program, which sends students on eight-week internships in Asia—helping them gain global skills and prepare for future careers. The grant is the largest the college has received from the foundation and has supported student placements in cities such as Seoul, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hong Kong.  VermontBiz

  • At its annual celebration last Wednesday, the Vermont Land Trust honored Camp DREAM and Boneyard Farm for expanding outdoor recreation and promoting sustainable farming—Mike Foote received the Land and Lives Award while Hannah Doyle earned the Eric Rozendaal Memorial Award that will help fund a new greenhouse this fall.  VermontBiz

  • Senator Welch reintroduced the Billionaires Income Tax Act with 20 colleagues to require billionaires with high incomes and assets to pay a fair share of taxes. The bill affected fewer than 1,000 taxpayers and raised over $500 billion for programs like Social Security and Medicare—backed by more than 100 groups.  VermontBiz
  • Immigrant parents in Vermont are using a new standby guardianship program to name temporary legal guardians for their kids if detained—volunteer attorneys are holding legal clinics and helping families complete the paperwork.   • Senator Welch and eight Senate colleagues sent a letter to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins urging a pause on plans to move Food and Nutrition Service staff from local areas to regional hubs—this change is seen as likely to hurt SNAP and delay vital support for communities.   • Today, Alex Garlick, an assistant professor at the University of Vermont, released his book Pre-Existing Conditions—How Lobbying Makes American Healthcare More Expensive, which shows how lobbying by hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and insurers drives up healthcare costs amid shrinking insurance access. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Nonprofits Champlain Housing Trust and Evernorth are developing Bay Ridge in Shelburne, which offers nearly 100 affordable homes for rent or sale at permanently subsidized rates. The $55 million project includes renovated motel apartments, new condominium units with shared equity, solar arrays and an upcoming playground—supporting progress in Vermont's housing market.  Vermont Public
  • After more than a decade of delays, Burlington’s downtown mall redevelopment opened its first phase yesterday with a 161-room hotel, 53 new apartments, a restaurant and a cafe at a ribbon cutting attended by local officials. The second phase—scheduled to finish in the fall with about 320 additional apartments, another hotel, and the reconnection of two blocked streets while including 20% affordable units—will begin next as city officials discuss an extension on the affordable deadline.  Vermont Public
