CULTURE NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Vermont businesses say a shrinking workforce is hurting many industries as nearly 100,000 residents near retirement and fewer young people stay in the state. Leaders are using flexible work schedules and new pension tax rules for military retirees—measures they hope will boost worker numbers in the coming years.  Burlington Free Press
  • Due to delayed federal funding for the Senior Community Service Employment Program — Vermont’s only job training program for low-income older adults — over 450 participants have been furloughed and nonprofits lost 3,920 work hours each month, reducing essential community services. The funding delay is straining incomes and local operations as workers and agencies face disruptions that affect overall community support.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont has been hit by a severe drought that forced towns like Berlin and Montpelier to issue water conservation notices after Berlin’s wells produced only half their usual water. State officials are working with drilling companies and state agencies to find new water sources while lake levels drop and recreational activities are affected—drought continues to strain our communities.  VTDigger
