  • The Gryphon restaurant closed after owner Tom Chadwick said downtown construction and drug problems hurt business—bankruptcy filings show mounting debts and past missteps forced him to stop operations. Employees were left unpaid as court records revealed the restaurant owed taxes and wages while Chadwick filed for bankruptcy.  Seven Days

CULTURE NEWS

  • Louis Meyers hosts a monthly book talk show on Town Meeting TV where he interviews notable authors including Nicholas Kristof and Karen Tumulty — he will interview Anthony Fauci later this month about his memoir. The semiretired doctor, who works part-time as a hospitalist, uses a calm, listening style that allows his guests to share their stories clearly.  Seven Days

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The state school redistricting task force reviewed its first draft map proposal on Monday, Sept. 29, which uses technical education centers to form the basis of 14 proposed districts. With only four meetings left to propose three maps by Dec. 1, members are under pressure to resolve details about district boundaries and governance—raising questions about consolidation of existing districts.  VTDigger
  • Champlain College launched a free online financial literacy academy for educators to learn how to teach personal finance following new statewide graduation requirements—Act 73—and it offers up to eight hours of professional development credit; registration opened Oct. 1 with courses available until Jan. 31.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont ski resorts are getting ready to make snow for the season but drought has lowered water levels in key ponds at Sugarbush, which may limit trail coverage after opening. Sugarbush said they have enough water now for some trails but will begin withdrawing from the Mad River (starting Nov. 1) if rain does not come.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Phil Scott appointed former federal prosecutor Colin Owyang as a Vermont Superior Court judge on Monday. Owyang—who prosecuted the 'shoe-bomber' Richard Reid and later led commercial development at Vermont Electric Power Company—is recognized for his diverse experience in both public and private sectors.  Burlington Free Press
  • Activists tracking Burlington airport reported that ICE has not been moving detainees on commercial flights since July 31—activists say detainees are now moved in unmarked vehicles to airports in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.  VTDigger
  • Vermont leaders in Barre raised concerns about SNAP changes as 2,500 households, including refugees and asylum seekers, will lose benefits this month—adding pressure on families facing rising food costs. Treasurer Mike Pieciak and local advocates noted that the cuts threaten both individual well-being and the local food economy.  NBC5
  • The government shutdown began Oct 1 when Congress failed to agree on funding, resulting in hundreds of thousands of federal workers being furloughed while essential services like mail delivery and air traffic control continue & Social Security still runs. Over 3,300 Vermont federal employees are among those affected, and nonessential services such as national park operations & passport processing may be delayed if the shutdown continues.  Burlington Free Press
  • More than 3,000 state workers have signed a petition asking Gov. Phil Scott to change his plan that will require them to work in the office at least three days a week starting December 1, saying remote work helps them perform better and saves on long commutes. The order is drawing strong pushback as many fear it could force them to leave their jobs — a move that may affect state services.  Seven Days

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vermont Blue Advantage announced that all Medicare Advantage plans will end on Dec. 31 and members must choose a new plan during the enrollment period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 to have coverage from Jan. 1. The change means members will soon receive mail notifications about the update.  NBC5
  • Nearly all Vermonters on individual Medicare Advantage plans will lose coverage in 2026 as UnitedHealth and Vermont Blue Advantage do not renew their offerings—affecting most of the 51,600 enrollees—while only Humana continues in certain counties; seniors must choose standard Medicare or a Medigap plan by March 4.  VTDigger
  • Vermont Blue Advantage announced today it will not offer Medicare Advantage plans in 2026 because high usage by members and payers leaving the market have made it hard to keep prices low—Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont said it will continue offering Medicare Supplemental plans to help residents manage their health.  VermontBiz
