COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Church Street Marketplace in Burlington is asking residents in South Burlington, Winooski, Colchester, Shelburne and Williston to donate a blue spruce that is 30 to 35 feet tall for the Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 28. The tree will be removed and its stump ground for free + the donating family will get VIP tickets.  NBC5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vermont Way Foods partnered with Vermont Migrant Justice to bring organic dairy products to store shelves as part of the Milk with Dignity program. Migrant dairy workers and farmers met Friday at the Acorn Food Hub in Middlebury—where they sampled herb blend cheese from Champlain Valley Creamery—and urged stronger accountability in Vermont’s dairy industry.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Christ the King School in Burlington held its annual Blessing of the Pets event on Friday in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi — Bishop John McDermott and Father Justin Baker blessed pets brought by students and community members, with bunnies, dogs, and cats in attendance.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Energy cut over $5 million in federal funds for Vermont renewable energy projects—removing nearly $3.4 million from UVM and about $1.8 million from Beta Technologies—saying the projects did not meet the nation’s needs. Rep. Becca Balint said the cuts, which affect projects in many House districts, are political.  VTDigger
  • ECFiber’s board chair F.X. Flinn said VISPO is ready to take over operations from Great Works Internet starting Jan. 1, although a judge ruled that GWI will run the service until Dec. 31 and mediation sessions have stalled. Great Works Internet filed for an expedited hearing on Sept. 12 to block alleged employee poaching (with several employees reportedly agreeing to join VISPO).  VTDigger
  • Today, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets requested a disaster declaration from the USDA for all 14 counties to help farmers hit by the drought amid the ongoing government shutdown that leaves federal aid uncertain. Officials urge farmers to keep detailed records, and local growers hope for a better season next year — with improved crops and higher yields.  NBC5
  • State government workers living outside Vermont must return to the office three days a week, as announced by the Scott administration on Friday. Those able to do so must come in by Dec 1 while others have until June 30—state leaders will hire replacements for those who do not comply.  VTDigger
  • State agencies are working to add shelter beds to help Vermonters before winter. In Burlington, 56 beds will be available in early November at a new way station while Good Samaritan Haven is expanding housing in Montpelier—seasonal beds open by the end of October and longer-term programs will start in the coming months.  NBC5
  • The U.S. Coast Guard station in Burlington has been told to pause posting on its Facebook page—this pause is due to a lapse in federal funding amid the ongoing government shutdown. Senior Chief Nicholas McGowen said the station used the page to share lake conditions and safety tips, and local boaters are advised to follow crew recommendations if they encounter hazards.  NBC5
