- ➤ A recent Pew Research study showed 46% of Vermonters did not belong to a religion—one of the nation's highest rates—and that overall religious affiliation fell by 9 percentage points since 2014. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Saint Michael’s College received a $400,000 NSF grant to build a biotechnology pipeline that will link students with Vermont’s growing biotech industry—teams from Grinnell College, Linfield University, and National University will work together on research and tech-transfer initiatives until 2028. Biology Professor Lyndsay Avery and Provost Gretchen Galbraith said the project aims to strengthen the college’s curriculum and expand connections with regional innovators. VermontBiz
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Extreme drought now covers 65% of Vermont and 53% of New Hampshire, up from 24% and 23% last week—lakeshore communities in Essex County, New York are also affected. The report, covering Sept. 30 to Oct. 7, indicates a few rain chances early next week may bring slight improvement. NBC5
- ➤ The Old Farmer's Almanac forecasts sunny but cooler-than-normal weather for Thanksgiving travel in New England, with snow limited mainly to northern Maine (89% of travelers will drive and 7% will fly) as people prepare for November 27. - ➤ A Burlington working group supports a proposed homestead exemption that will lower taxes for homeowners by up to $200 while raising taxes for second homes and commercial properties—tasked by Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak to fix tax inequities, the group will soon present a proposal for a charter change ballot in March 2026. - ➤ Governor Phil Scott visited Burlington this week to meet with Mayor Emma Mulvaney Stanak to discuss how a state–city partnership may address challenges facing Burlington — both officials said they are optimistic about progress with increased police patrols and mental health support.
