- ➤ The Green Mountain Book Festival returns Saturday, Oct. 18 in Burlington at Fletcher Free Library and Phoenix Books as a one-day event focusing on science fiction after federal arts funding cuts. The festival will host panels with author John Scalzi and local writers in several sessions throughout the day. Burlington Free Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than 450 high school students gathered at Vermont State University Randolph on October 9 for the Women Can Do conference to explore trades and STEM careers through hands-on practice in welding, aviation mechanics and heavy equipment operation. A Resource Fair provided career tips and offered training and loan options from VSAC+ local employers+ to help guide students in planning their futures. VermontBiz
- ➤ VAAFM opened applications for the grant to help early childhood programs and non-profit organizations purchase CSA shares from local farms. Applicants can apply now through November 25 and will be notified in February while projects will begin in March or April next year (a webinar is scheduled October 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.). - ➤ Linda Alvarez from Windham Regional Career Center in Brattleboro was named the 2026 Vermont Teacher of the Year by the Vermont Agency of Education. She will begin her role on January 1 and will serve as an advocate for career technical education—marking the first time a CTE educator has received this honor. VermontBiz
- ➤ Winooski School District's day-long cellphone ban and e-pass system has improved student engagement and reduced distractions, according to co-principal Kate Groton, who said teachers are finding more focus in class. Instagram announced changes to block adult content for teens, and state officials—including the Attorney General and Department of Health—are monitoring social media's impact on youth mental health. - ➤ The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is hosting a beach cleanup on Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. at North Hero State Park to clear vegetation from turtle nesting sites for next year. - ➤ Since the federal shutdown began on Oct. 1, some Vermont federal sites have altered services while others remain available. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Vermont Department of Health reported that COVID hospitalizations fell slightly after an increase in cases that began in August. Hospital data from September 30 to October 6 showed five outbreaks last week — all in long-term care facilities — and none in schools. VermontBiz
