EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVM's board of trustees approved tuition hikes on Friday in its first meeting with President Marlene Tromp. In-state tuition will rise 2% to $16,606 and out-of-state tuition will climb 4.5% to $44,647 while room and board will increase 3.5% starting next July—changes that will affect the next academic year.  Vermont Public
  • University of Vermont students lined up Monday at the Ira Allen Chapel to hear U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor talk about her career, her new children’s book, and her views on politics—she urged young people to think boldly about the future. UVM President Marlene Tromp hosted the event and hundreds attended—Middlebury professor Matt Dickinson said he hopes more high-profile guests visit campus soon.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

Local officials in Burlington, South Burlington and Winooski passed resolutions over jet noise — so residents may hear the jets more often this month.  Burlington Free Press
  • Chittenden County officials announced major road projects in Burlington that are affecting traffic on Champlain Parkway and Main Street. • County officials say road projects in Chittenden County are causing traffic delays in South Burlington, Colchester, Essex Junction, Williston and Winooski—resurfacing on Vermont Route 116 ended in mid-October while work on water lines and highway exits will finish as late as summer 2027—so drivers should plan extra travel time.  Burlington Free Press
