BUSINESS NEWS

  • Needleman's bridal shop celebrated 100 years on Thursday in South Burlington — family members have run the business since it began in 1925 as a formal wear shop in Newport and shifted to bridal attire in the 1960s. Mark Needleman, who has led the shop for 32 years, celebrated with his wife and two employees and looks forward to many more years of service.  NBC5
  • Grizzly MEP announced a partnership with Vermont Mechanical — a contractor with offices in Williston and Lebanon — to expand its network of commercial mechanical, electrical and plumbing services in the region. Peter Morgan was also named Senior Vice President of M&A to lead efforts to identify further growth opportunities.  VermontBiz
  • Kestrel Coffee Roasters hosted a grand opening of its first airport kiosk at Burlington International Airport on Thursday—marking its fourth location; co-owner Charlotte Steverson said the kiosk, opened after a year-long bid process, now serves travelers from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new micro cinema called Partizanfilm is opening soon in downtown Burlington to bring back movie nights after the Roxy closed last year. The theater will have two small auditoriums and a lobby with a café—tickets will range from $5 to $12 as it plans to open mid-November.  NBC5
  • A Vermont-made documentary titled 'Gone Guys' explores the struggles of boys and young men and is now being screened for free at public schools, libraries, and nonprofits across the state. The film (which won Best Documentary Feature at the Vermont Film Festival and the Jonathan Daniels Award) is supported by local foundations as it continues its tour through December.  Burlington Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Burlington have dropped to $3.16 per gallon today—a decline of 5.8 cents from last week and 12.1 cents lower than a month ago. Crude oil prices increased over 5% after new sanctions on Russia’s two largest crude companies, while many stations nationwide continue to offer rates under $3 per gallon.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department urges Vermonters to install bat houses as safe homes for bats to keep insect pests at bay—Bat Week from Oct. 24-31 will explain how to safely remove bats from buildings and support conservation.  VermontBiz
  • Rain improved drought conditions in Vermont as extreme drought dropped from 67% to 59% and severe drought went from 96% to 88% based on data from October 14 to October 21. Essex County in New York now reports no extreme drought and a continued showery pattern may help soil moisture further even though more rain is needed.  NBC5

  • Vermont lawmakers are preparing a stopgap plan to deliver state funds for food stamps & heating benefits if the federal shutdown extends into November. The Emergency Board will meet next week to decide the plan & ensure households get the essential help they need.  VTDigger
