COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront partnered with the Burlington Bike Park Coalition and the Fellowship of the Wheel to complete Phase I of the Bike Park at Leddy Park on October 25 using a state grant — the park now offers half a mile of adaptive mountain bike trails designed for beginners. Future phases will add advanced trails and a paved pump track as fundraising continues.  VermontBiz
  • The new shelter at 58 Pearl St in Burlington will open early November to hold up to 56 people plus six extra spots on very cold nights — guests must sign up ahead and work with caseworkers to move toward housing. Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said this move comes as nearly 300 people are living outdoors and more shelter space is urgently needed.  Vermont Public

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pascolo Ristorante will return to its original location at 83 Church Street next year. The Italian restaurant will close its Sweetwaters site on 120 Church Street on Dec. 31 and reopen in January with the same staff, menu and new surprises — the move was announced on Facebook Monday afternoon.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Indigenous Forest Knowledge Fund awarded more than $1 million to three Indigenous-led projects—one led by Professor John Daigle of the University of Maine, which will research ways to protect ash trees used in basket weaving in the Northeast. The grants support tribal forest research that benefits communities in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.  Vermont Public

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School district leaders said Burlington schools eliminated racial disparities in suspensions—data from last year shows students of color made up 33% of suspensions versus 50% two years ago. The district credits restorative practices—like revised suspension guidelines and staff training—for the success and will continue these efforts to support all students.  VTDigger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During Bat Week—seven days leading up to Halloween—experts have gathered to advise property owners on using one-way doors and bat houses to safely remove bats, as Vermont Fish and Wildlife notes nine native species that help control insect pests. Biologist Alyssa Bennet said property owners can consult professionals or follow detailed guides on the agency website for assistance.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Burlington International’s aviation director Nic Longo outlined plans for a 25,000-square-foot North Expansion Terminal during a Friday lecture at Faith United Methodist Church. The terminal will use timber construction, geothermal heating, and rooftop solar to boost capacity and sustainability — his talk also addressed community concerns over F-35 noise and the return of JetBlue service.  VTDigger
  • County officials announced that several road construction projects will affect travel in Chittenden County this week. In Burlington, projects on Champlain Parkway and Main Street will cause lane restrictions and closures with delays on weekdays, while similar work in Colchester, Essex Junction, and Bolton will require detours and extra travel time.  Burlington Free Press

  • Vermont Federal Credit Union partnered with the Cancer Patient Support Foundation as the presenting sponsor for the Third Annual Casino Night: Bet on Hope held at Hula Lakeside in Burlington on October 17—an event that raised funds to help over 500 Vermont cancer patients with essential needs.  VermontBiz

  • On Sunday, Oct. 26, CVU girls soccer avoided an upset in the quarterfinals by winning 3-1 over Essex at Burlington High School. The defending champions rallied with a late free kick and penalty from Reese Kingsbury — Elsa Klein sealed the win with an insurance goal to keep their title bid alive.  Burlington Free Press
