COMMUNITY NEWS

  • COTS will open a new 56-bed shelter in downtown Burlington early next month at 58 Pearl Street—the former Social Security office that briefly hosted a winter warming shelter—to help address the shortage of beds for homeless residents. New bunk beds are set to arrive on November 11th before guests move from the 36-bed Church Street location.  Seven Days

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fidium completed its fiber network expansion on Oct 28 with help from CCCUD, connecting more than 1,900 homes & businesses in Essex Town, Essex Junction, Jericho, Shelburne, Westford, and Williston. The company now serves over 17,000 locations in the county and plans to visit local communities in the coming weeks to explain service options.  VermontBiz
  • O Bread Bakery in Shelburne, just 20 minutes from Burlington, was named Vermont’s best bakery by a well-known food website. The family-run bakery has made sourdough bread and other treats since 1977 — find it at 352 Farm Barn Lane.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An Annie E. Casey Foundation report shows that child poverty in the U.S. nearly tripled from 5% in 2021 to 13% in 2024—Vermont now has a supplemental rate of 9% as costs rise after the loss of pandemic-era supports. The study warns that without continued government programs, poverty rates would nearly double, highlighting the vital role of public policies in aiding families.  VermontBiz
  • Secretary of Administration Sarah Clark released Vermont’s September revenue results showing the General Fund surpassed its target with personal income taxes performing well while the Transportation and Education Funds slightly underperformed — the three funds together reached $341.8 million, about 2.2% above forecast.  VermontBiz
  • Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak named Phil Lewis as the new director for the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department to fill the vacancy left when Cindi Wight stepped down in June—his appointment will be considered at City Council on Nov. 3.  Burlington Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • UVM Medical Center launched a new transcatheter heart valve replacement program this summer that lets doctors replace faulty tricuspid valves using thin catheters—helping patients avoid open-heart surgery and recover quickly. Patients such as Charlene Burroughs have already experienced improved energy and breathing since undergoing the procedure.  VermontBiz
  • UVM Health’s children’s hospital in Burlington will be renamed Golisano Children’s Hospital after receiving a $25 million donation from billionaire Thomas Golisano (paid in $5 million increments over five years) that will expand its complex care program and broaden subspecialty services beyond Burlington. The funds will help hire more staff and improve care for children with unique health needs.  VTDigger
  • Some of Vermont’s largest nursing homes struggled under new ownership approved through a longstanding transfer process—violations included neglect, medication errors, and a resident death from lithium toxicity at MissionCare at Bennington. In response, state inspectors implemented corrective plans and increased oversight to improve care for residents.  VTDigger
  • Vermont authorities now have a new protocol that lets 911 call-takers transfer mental health calls to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline so callers get help quickly. The system started as a pilot at Hartford and Westminster and is now used statewide to ensure 911 stays focused on emergencies.  VermontBiz
