COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Farmers at Hackett's Orchard and Paul Mazza's Farm Stand have raised over $5,000 in donations to help Jamaican workers affected by Hurricane Melissa. They plan to use the funds to buy supplies and pay shipping costs—while still accepting non-perishable foods and clothes.  NBC5
  • Burlington families with Cuban ties are anxiously trying to contact loved ones after Hurricane Melissa caused extensive flooding and damage in Cuba. Eduardo Loyola and Oscar Arencibia expressed concern about rising floodwaters and damaged infrastructure—officials are assessing the damage as the U.S. State Department deploys a disaster response team.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, community and education leaders unveiled the new Burlington Aviation Education Center at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport with a ribbon cutting. The renovated facility offers aviation, automotive, and engineering programs that will connect students with local aerospace jobs.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Barnard resident Ben Kogan launched his nonprofit Reusable Solutions in 2021 to recover plastic beer and cider four‐pack carriers before they become waste—he collects up to 4,000 carriers each month from 10 local Vermont spots and 2 in New Hampshire, sanitizes them and sells them at a discount to breweries.  Seven Days

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vermont’s health care premiums will nearly double next year as federal subsidies end, forcing many residents to pay much higher monthly costs for less coverage. Insurers are also reducing options such as Medicare Advantage (a change expected to increase financial pressure on vulnerable hospitals).  Seven Days
  • Rutland Regional Medical Center said it will close its five inpatient pediatric beds on Dec. 21 because few children need overnight care—kids needing such care will be transferred to Burlington’s UVM Health or another nearby hospital. The change will save about $3.1 million a year while keeping emergency and outpatient services in place.  VTDigger
  • NRM partnered with Olympian Paula Moltzan to promote fertility awareness so that athletes can plan careers and families without compromise—she will wear a helmet featuring a uterus design to spur conversation about egg freezing. The initiative aims to educate sports organizations on adding fertility coverage as a basic benefit and help individuals take control of their reproductive futures.  VermontBiz

  • Rice defeated South Burlington 7—0 and Champlain Valley beat Burr and Burton 3—0 in Division I field hockey semifinals at Middlebury College on Oct. 28, sending both teams to the championship on Nov. 1 at UVM's Moulton Winder Field. Key players helped secure the wins as Rice nears an undefeated season and Champlain Valley reaches its first final since 2022.  Burlington Free Press
